BALLSTON SPA, NY – After nearly a decade with the Hearst Corporation, the Ballston Journal has returned to local ownership. Ballston Spa publisher and resident Angela McFarland assumed control of the 211-year-old weekly this week.

Capital Region Newspaper is a part of the Hearst Corporation. The Capital Region Newspaper division is composed of nine pennysaver type publications stretching from Latham to Saratoga Springs. The Journal was the only newspaper in the group.

Smith said that the Ballston-Malta Pennysaver already serves advertising customers in this region and that Capital Region Newspapers “couldn’t afford the luxury of two competing papers in the same market.” “I know how important this newspaper is to the community,” said Smith, “but we need[ed] to make this business decision.”

Saratoga Springs, NY – Caroline Street School, 3rd Grade teachers Mrs. Pipino, Mrs. Kerls and Mrs. Terry, worked with their students to create beautiful butterflies, lady bugs, dragonflies and flowers that now grace the Phila Street windows of Impressions of Saratoga. Marianne Barker, owner of Impressions, was brainstorming with her staff over the winter, trying to plan their window displays and how to possibly engage some school classes to help. Marianne approached Rebecca Pipino, a former employee of Impressions during her early days in Saratoga, with the idea to challenge her 3rd grade students to create a window display celebrating the arrival of spring.

The students’ creative efforts will be on display in the five windows that face Phila Street until mid May. Each student and their teachers will be thanked by receiving a special gift from Impressions.

Established in 1978, Impressions of Saratoga is a [...]

LAKE GEORGE, NY — On April 17th, 2008, Adirondack Winery & Tasting Room opened its doors to the public for the very first time. Now, one year later, the Lake George “micro-winery” is heading into its second season with more hand-crafted wines and a positive outlook for its business in 2009.

Adirondack Winery is one of a handful of businesses that have beaten the odds in this recession. “When we opened last season, we did our best to estimate customer demand, but quickly found out we had not made enough wine. It was always our intention to only sell the wines we make at our store, but early in the season, we faced the fact that we would have none of our wines on the shelf if we stuck with that plan, so we also carried some wines from other New York State wineries through the end of [...]
