Saratoga Farmers’ Market and the Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council (EOC) are encouraging local WIC participants, SNAP (food stamp) recipients, and eligible senior citizens to take advantage of a recent extension in Farmers Market Nutrition Program and Fresh Connect coupon benefits at the farmers’ market. Due to Hurricane Sandy’s impact on the downstate region, the New York Farmers Market Nutrition Program and the Fresh Connect program have both been extended statewide by two weeks, through Saturday, December 1.

“Clients who have received FMNP coupons to use at farmers’ markets now have extra time to redeem them. This two-week extension should help our families use up their coupons at the farmers’ market to enjoy fresh local food,” commented Cathy Valenty, WIC Program Director for Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council.
“Our farmers are very happy to make recommendations and provide preparation tips and recipes to any of our customers,” notes Sandy Arnold of Pleasant Valley Farm in Argyle, a farm that brings vegetable crops year-round to Saratoga Farmers’ Market. “There are about 8 to 10 farms that can accept FMNP coupons at our market, each with a wide selection of products, so there’s nice variety for FMNP shoppers.
Fresh Connect Coupons
In addition to accepting FMNP coupons, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market accepts EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) cards issued by the government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). After a quick electronic card swipe at the market’s information desk, an EBT card holder receives wooden market tokens to spend at any market vendor.
The Fresh Connect coupons were being issued to all SNAP recipients earlier in the fall, and are now available for an additional two weeks. Through December 1, for every $5 in market tokens purchased with EBT, the cardholder will get an additional $2 Fresh Connect coupon to use for fresh food purchases.
During the winter, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market is open from November through April on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Division Street Elementary School, 220 Division Street in Saratoga Springs. More than 30 vendors bring a wide variety of products, including produce, meat, fish, dairy, eggs, baked goods, décor and gift items.
