Saratoga Springs, NY: Skidmore’s Tang Museum is collaborating with two legendary Saratoga institutions, Caffè Lena and Yaddo, to present exhibitions this summer, and is also offering a unique participatory project called TRANSFORMer, created to spotlight the work of local nonprofit organizations.

These three exhibitions of special interest to Saratogians—but with broad appeal as well—are Caffè Lena: Inside America’s Legendary Folk Music Coffeehouse (June 1–Oct. 20); The First 15: Photography from the Meredith S. Moody Residency at Yaddo (June 8–Sept. 29); and TRANSFORMer: Platform for Community Education, Activism, and Fundraising (June 8–Aug. 11).

Premiere performance in 1913 caused shock and outrage

May 29 of this year marks the 100th anniversary of the premiere performance of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a ballet written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Though The Rite of Spring has had a powerful influence on modern music and dance, things at the premiere did not go well, to put it mildly.

The avant-garde nature of the music, outrageous costumes, and unusual choreography caused quite a stir. The piece included pagan imagery, jarring dance movements, and dissonant music, all of which proved too much for the audience.

Short Story Contest, Free Admission With Perks Through YES! Program

SaratogaArtsFest 2013, the citywide celebration of the arts scheduled for June 6-9, is offering two special opportunities for area students to participate in the festival and get involved with the arts.

The ArtsFest is this year hosting its first high school short story contest, with the intention of making it an annual event. Area students in grades 9-12 are invited to submit a work of original, short fiction of up to 1,000 words. In keeping with the festival theme of “Celebrating 150 Years of Arts in Saratoga,” the stories should envision Saratoga Springs 150 years in the future, in the year 2163.

The 2013 Saratoga Lions Duathlon will be held at 8 A.M. on May 26 at Saratoga Casino and Raceway. Race participants will tackle a 5k run, followed by a 20-mile bike ride, and finishing with another 5k run. Participants can be individuals or teams of two or three people.
