        <![CDATA[I've been so busy these past few months that I have neglected one of my best friends; the Public library. Yesterday afternoon I spent a better part of the day there. I borrowed Mark Levin's <span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: underline;">Liberty and Tyranny</span> and Eduardo Galeano's <span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: underline;">Mirrors</span> at a friends suggestion.<div><br /></div><div>I then wandered into the Book Bag (the used book store in the library) and scored Ruth Reichl's 1998 memoir,&nbsp;<span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: underline;">Tender at the Bone</span>-Growing up at the Table. It was only $2!! &nbsp;Ruth Reichl is probably one of the best food writers of our time. Everyone thinks that they can write intelligently about food and make it interesting but very few people actually know what they are talking about. Not everyone can be M.F.K. Fisher, Ruth Reichl or Anthony Bourdain.</div>]]>

        <![CDATA[Thank you to all my loyal fans who have continually asked me about my blog. I know I have been neglecting this baby for awhile. My job as Managing Editor of the Ballston Journal keeps this girl rather busy.<div><br /></div><div>Anyway........Happy New Year to all.</div><div><br /></div><div>My new year is getting off to a rather good start. Last night, I once again participated in the First Night 5K run up at Skidmore. Weather and conditions were excellent this year. In spite of being pitifully out of shape compared to last year and 20 lbs heavier this year (my new job is making me fat) I finished in 43 minutes and 16 seconds. Yes, I know I am out of practice. I am trying to get back in the habit of running every day like I used to.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>Today I went to the City Center here in Saratoga for the swearing in ceremony of our elected officials. I was personally invited by Ken Ivins and Joanne Yepsen. I am glad I went as I saw a lot of people I haven't seen in awhile.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>It was good to see Michelle Boxley, John Franck's deputy, and also Catholic Priest Neil Draves Arpeia who has known me all my life.</div><div><br /></div><div>I am happy for the new Public Safety Commissioner Richard Wirth and I am interested in seeing how he will do and what he will bring the city of Saratoga.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>The next town meeting will be Tuesday night. If I am able to go, I know I will see the usual suspects.</div>]]>

the right gift to give someone around the holidays need not be difficult or
expensive; but you do want to give a gift that is not only thoughtful but more
importantly appropriate. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>While
it's probably not a good idea to give someone in recovery a bottle of wine or
the person who always seems to be rather tardy a watch; you can make a good
impression by paying attention to what someone's interests are without having
to<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp; </span>pillage your checking account.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>For
the coffee connoisseur, you have quite a few options, of which won't break your
bank account. You can choose to buy a pound of coffee at your local coffee
house and simply put a bow or fancy ribbon around it and it will only cost
about $10. Or you can choose to buy that same individual a fancy coffee mug
that will run you anywhere from $5-$10. You can also buy a coffee bean grinder
from $10-$20.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>If
you are unsure about what book to buy the avid reader in your life you can
purchase a gift card from almost any book store in the amount of $5-$25, so
they can choose whatever they want.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>In
an office setting you can always bake cookies and cupcakes and display them on
a fancy festive platter for everyone's enjoyment. For a co-worker who enjoys a
cigar you don't have to buy a whole box, cigars are sold individually and can
run as little as $5 dollars a cigar, a cigar cutter is also a nice gift and can
cost as little as $5.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>If
you are going to buy someone a bottle of wine it is important to find out if
they prefer white or red, as most people do have a preference. There are many
quality wines out there both white and red that are less than $10, if you are
undecided, ask someone who works in the store as they are knowledgeable and
happy to give you a list of their personal favorites.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>If
you are still unsure as to what to give someone in the office you can always
buy someone a thoughtful card and buy a few inexpensive lottery tickets to put
inside the card. There are many holiday themed cards to choose from and can
cost as little as $1.</p>
