The weekend after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping weekend of the holiday season, and Small Business Saturday was first introduced in 2010 to help keep those dollars local.
Now in its fourth year, Small Business Saturday is getting more attention than ever. Strategically positioned between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday occurs on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year, Small Business Saturday falls November 30.
Small Business Saturday is the brainchild of credit card company American Express with aim to help promote shopping small and supporting your local economy. A recent status update on their Facebook page sums it up nicely:
"Small Business Saturday is a day to support the small businesses that fuel our economy and invigorate communities. Make the pledge to Shop Small..."
Not a fan of Black Friday? Small Business Saturday is the perfect alternative. While Black Friday offers incredible door buster deals with shoppers on crazed campouts to be first in line, Small Business Saturday is a bit more refined. Many small businesses will be offering discounts and deals for Small Business Saturday, but the typical crowds and scenes that play out at national chains on Black Friday aren't typical of the local shop small experience (thankfully).
American Express is sweetening the deal by offering a free $10 statement credit to anyone who uses their registered AMEX card to make a purchase of $10 or more at a qualifying small business on Small Business Saturday, November 30, 2013. You can register your American Express card through the Small Business Saturday Facebook page or on the AMEX website. More info here
And of course, even if you don't use American Express (and maybe you happen to love Black Friday), Small Business Saturday is still an event everyone can feel good about participating in. It's a great way to support small businesses in your local community and find unique gifts for everyone on your list... all while enjoying the best in personalized customer service! When everyone makes a small effort, together we can make a big impact.
