News > AMD to Build Chip Plant in Malta

Malta, NY -- After over two years of discussion, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has committed to building a $4.6 billion computer chip manufacturing plant in Luther Forest Techonology Park in Malta.

AMD will be The Foundry Company and help meet the industry's growing needs for semiconductor manufacturing services. The state has committed to Saratoga Hospitalgrants and tax breaks that will allow it to happen.

The project still needs approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment before AMD can break ground. It is expected the approvals will be received by early 2009.

Construction of the new plant is expected to start in mid 2009. Though the plant is years away from completion the area is already excited about what the plant will bring to Saratoga County. The plant is expected to bring over 1400 permanent jobs, 4300 construction jobs and thousands of spin-off jobs. The impact of AMD is expected to transform the community of Malta as well the entire upstate economy.
