Saratoga.com sits down for a 10 Questions interview with Mike Waldron, CEO of Waldron Builders, Inc. This Saratoga Springs custom home building business handles custom homes, additions, remodeling and more. Here we take a look at both the personal side and the business side of Mike Waldron, the man behind it all.

  1. Are you native to the Saratoga area?
  2. Yes, born and raised. Graduated from Saratoga Springs High School.

  3. How long have you been in the custom home building business?
  4. For almost 20 years. I was with my parents as director of operations and a part owner for many years, and then I decided to keep the tradition alive with Waldron Builders after my parents retired.

  5. What sets you apart from other custom home builders in the area?
  6. My expertise runs pretty deep in all facets of the design and build process. I own the mechanical company that does the installations on every Waldron house so I am involved in all aspects of building the house, from design, to estimating, through all production, to closing. I also make sure to stay on top of all the latest technologies so our customers have not only a beautiful home, but one that is comfortable, affordable and technologically fit for today's market.

  7. Do you have kids?
  8. Yes, three daughters: a 7 year old, 12 year old and a 19-year-old college student.

  9. Do you have pets?
  10. Yes, 3 dogs and 2 cats. you will see my golden retriever, Titan, on the job sites with me occasionally.

  11. What's the best part of your job?
  12. After closing on a new house, I like to ask our customers if they like their house or love their home, and so far, everyone chooses the latter. Building a house can be very stressful, but seeing these families in their new home – and loving their home – makes it all worth it.

  13. Can you offer any advice for the first-time home buyer?
  14. Do your homework. There are many, many building companies out there, most reputable, but there are a few who are only interested in the bottom line. Don't pick a builder because they promise to build you a house for the cheapest amount of money, or based on location only. In the end, you do get what you pay for. Verify references, check with the Better Business Bureau. Reputation means a lot in this business. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Get educated on the process along with the team members and players associated with the construction of your new home.

  15. What would you tell a business entrepreneur about the Saratoga area?
  16. Unlike most of New York State, Saratoga County is still growing, and thanks to businesses like AMD and GLOBAL FOUNDRIES, we will continue to grow. The demographics are so diverse, there is something for everyone here.

  17. What inspires you?
  18. Doing what was said can't be done. Fighting the fight in a bad economy and surviving, seeing folks who are dedicated and committed to making it happen.

  19. Where is your favorite place to relax?
  20. I try to spend every Sunday with my family. We go to church, we socialize and we try to do fun family things, so my favorite place is not necessarily a place, but who i spend my time with, and that is with my family. I have a beautiful, supportive wife who makes doing my job much easier, and of course my daughters. I try to stay involved with my girls as much as possible.
