Learn About The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Council - A Saratoga Springs Not-For-Profit

SARATOGA SPRINGS NY -- The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Council is a not-for-profit community agency that has served children, youth, and families throughout Saratoga County for over a quarter of a century. The agency provides education, information, and referral services in order to strengthen individuals, families, schools and communities to combat, reduce and overcome the damaging effects of destructive behaviors including alcohol and drug use, violence, delinquency and problem gambling. The Prevention Council offers a variety of school-based prevention programs throughout Saratoga County. All programs are taught by trained staff members who work closely with each school district to meet each school district's student and scheduling needs while also meeting New York State learning standards, and maintaining program effectiveness.

The Prevention Council's community programs include:

  • Problem Gambling Prevention
  • Saratoga County Youth Court
  • All Stars Camp
  • Cool Out of School
  • Risk and Responsibility classes for young adult offenders
  • Victim Impact Panels

The agency also offers youth and family clinical services and family programs such as Clean & Sober Parenting, Head Start Family Assistance Program, Strengthening Families Program, and Parenting Wisely (coming soon).

In addition to the programs and services mentioned, the agency serves as the fiscal agent for three community coalitions in Saratoga County. The community coalitions are the Saratoga Partnership for Prevention, the Southern Adirondack Tobacco-Free Coalition, and the Shenendehowa Community Coalition.   Two newer coalitions are working in the communities of Mechanicville and Ballston Spa in order to enhance community support for positive youth development.

The Saratoga Partnership for Prevention is a coalition of community leaders, organizations, and citizens interested in decreasing youthful substance use, developing better relationships between youth and adults, building family and community norms against drug use, and maximizing the efforts of the various human service agencies in the upstate New York community of Saratoga Springs.

The Southern Adirondack Tobacco Free Coalition (SATFC) is a grassroots coalition of local agencies and individuals committed to creating a tobacco-free environment. SATFC has been serving the Adirondack region for ten years with resources for stopping smoking, media campaigns on the danger of secondhand smoke, and initiatives in preventing tobacco use among youth. SATFC serves a 3-county region of the Adirondacks including Saratoga, Warren and Washington counties. SATFC is located in Saratoga Springs, New York. The Coalition is funded by the New York State Department of Health’s Tobacco Control Program.

The Shenendehowa Community Coalition – A Community that Cares – is committed to building a safe and healthy community for youth. The group includes representatives from the District Attorney’s office, CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Saratoga Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services, Southern Saratoga County YMCA, representatives from town government, school administration, and Prevention Council staff.
