Each week at the end of my column I include an update on the progress of my weight loss, one of five self improvements I targeted for 2007. A few months ago, I was asked if I would ever mention where I was with the other ones.
Since Sunday, July 1 marks the halfway point of the year, I figure it’s the perfect time to bring everyone up-to-date. Without further ado, here’s my top five New Year’s Resolution’s revisited.
I resolve to lose 25 pounds and then put 10 pounds back on in muscle.
At this point the likelihood of obtaining my goal is good. I’ve shed 11 pounds from my original weight of 160 since I started. The number is a bit disappointing to me though because I haven’t lost any weight in the past two months. I still have a decent amount of weight to drop and I know the hardest part ahead will be the muscle building.
In the future, I need to adhere more closely to a concise routine with better eating habits and regular exercise. There’s a distinct possibility I will start working out at a gym.
I resolve to cook and prepare more meals for myself.
At this point the likelihood of obtaining my goal is very good. Although I still frequently end up eating far too late at night, junk food has become only an occasional indulgence. Salads and fruit have become staples of my diet because they’re low in calories and require little prep work. I have tried my hand at some more elaborate meals as well including garlic ginger teriyaki shrimp, Southwestern chicken, scrambled and fried eggs and a few pasta dishes.
In the future, I’d like to try out some recipes from a cookbook I purchased a few weeks back and start packing myself a lunch for work.
I resolve to become more literate.
At this point the likelihood of obtaining my goal is poor. I haven’t finished a single book yet this year. I’m currently in the midst of two, but I have a long way to go on both.
In the future, I want to be able to finish at least three books a month. The problem has been and remains my lack of time. Unless I can find a way to set aside 20 minutes or a half hour daily, I fear I’ll never complete more than two or three books in a year. I may wind up making this my sole resolution for 2008.
I resolve to focus more on my career goals.
At this point the likelihood of obtaining my goal is good. To be a better journalist, I’ve been reading articles on different ways to tackle subjects and how to write more clearly and succinctly. Since I’m contemplating becoming a lawyer, I’ve been researching schools, requirements and different specialties as well as talking to people in the field.
In the future, I need to concentrate more on my creative writing and start studying for the LSAT’s.
I resolve to watch more flicks.
At this point the likelihood of obtaining my goal is very good. Watching movies is my favorite pastime, and nothing helps me relax more once I get home from work. In 2006 I watched approximately 350 films, so this year’s goal has been to hit the 400 mark. I believe I’m approximately 15 short of having watched a movie every day as of now.
In the future, I hope to attend more movies in the theater and increase my total by catching a few more flicks at home on the weekends.
At the end of the year, I’ll be writing a column letting everyone know my final results.
Resolution update:
