Saratoga Springs – Dominick J. Nardelli, 88, a prominent Saratoga Springs businessman, died peacefully Monday (July 16, 2007) at Wesley Health Care Center. In recent years he resided at Woodlawn Commons.
Born on November 29, 1918 in Schuylerville, NY, he is the son of the late Andrew and Incoronata (Yarossi) Nardelli. Dom graduated from Schuylerville High School where he earned varsity letters in track and basketball. During World War II he served in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Merrimack in the Panama Canal Zone. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Dom operated a taxi business in Schuylerville. He married the former Teresa L. Bardino on October 24, 1954 at St. Peter’s Church, Saratoga Springs. Mrs. Nardelli passed away in 1996. In 1954, he and his wife purchased the Governor John Dix summer estate in Clarks Mills, NY, which they used as their summer residence and operated as a hotel and restaurant catering to the visitors of the Schuylerville Yacht Basin. They subsequently sold the estate to the National Bureau of Private Schools and the estate was developed into the Schuyler Prep School for Boys. Together with his late father-in-law, Charles J. Bardino, Sr. and his brother-in-law, the late Francis E. Corsale, he was part of a family visionary project to bring commercial development and restore beauty to South Broadway in Saratoga Springs. He first built the Marisa Motel on the corner of Broadway and West Circular St. in the late 1950’s. He also operated the Hotel Arthur on the current site of South Broadway’s Dunkin Donuts. In 1973, he purchased the Hotel Brenner and the Hotel Biller and renovated them to create the Coachman’s Inn, which he sold in 1984 and is today known as the Inn at Saratoga. He and his wife also purchased the property at 178 Broadway, Saratoga, which they also renovated into the Nardelli family home and adjacent Carriage House Motel.
Mr. Nardelli was an active member of St. Peter’s parish.
He was also a member of the Architectural Review Board for the City of Saratoga Springs, the Chamber of Commerce, a lifetime member of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the Senior Citizens Center.
He enjoyed traveling, having visited numerous countries during his time in the military and as a civilian. For many years he maintained a winter residence in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Carl Nardelli and Patrick Nardelli and one sister, Rose Nardelli Vinett.
He is survived by his daughter, Marisa G. Nardelli and her two daughters, Tereska and Francesca; a sister-in-law, Marie Bardino Corsale; a brother-in-law, Charles J. Bardino, Jr. and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Thursday (July 19, 2007) at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373).
A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia, cousin of the late Mrs. Nardelli, on Friday (July 20, 2007) at 10:30am at the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway. The Rite of Committal will follow in the family plot at St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Ave.
