There were two noteworthy tournaments held over the weekend. The first was the annual Eagle Crest Shoot-out.

Fifty-eight of the area’s best amateurs tried to qualify for 10 positions in the nine-hole shoot-out. It took a score of 76 or better to make it to the nine-hole final. It’s then when the excitement begins and it’s fun and a joy to watch.

One player with the highest score is eliminated on each hole until there are two players left coming into the final ninth hole. If there is a tie, the player moving on is determined by a chip off. The 2007 champion is Winding Brook Country Club member Jim Welch. He defeated former pro Paul Pratico from Schenectady. Also qualifying with a score of 74 is Aaron Aubuchon of Saratoga National. Failing to qualify were McGregor Links members Matt Canavan (82) and Joe Lanci (83).

The other tourney was the annual McGregor Links Country Club’s very popular member-guest tournament. A three-day event, it involves six nine-hole matches in seven different flights depending on handicap. Points are accumulated with each match and the highest accumulated score in that flight is declared the winner. The overall winner was the team of member Bill Beers and his guest, Bill Donnelly, with a total score of 32. They were in the fourth flight. Runners-up in that flight were Nick Alex and Jeremiah Mahar with 29.5 points.
