Sports - Johnson wins feature again

Ronnie Johnson of Duanesburg put the JRP Motorsports No. 2 in Albany-Saratoga Speedway’s Victory Lane for the second week in a row.

The start of the 35-Lap feature saw Tim Hartman grab the lead after one lap, but that was all he would lead as fourth-starting Mike Perrotte blasted around him on Lap 2 and proceeded to pull away from the competition.

The race would go Caution-free the entire 35 laps and by mid-race Perorate had a half-track lead.

Matt Sheppard and Ronnie Johnson started 11th and 13th respectively and it took them until Lap 17 to take over second and third, but by then Perrotte was out of sight.

With flagger Bob Bigelow giving Perrotte signals that he had a huge lead, lapped traffic began playing a role in the race as Perrotte was catching groups of cars running side-by-side blocking his path.

Johnson, who had taken second from Sheppard on Lap 25, was now closing in on Perrotte. By Lap 32, Johnson was on his back bumper and one lap later, drove around the outside of Perrotte.

Johnson came away with the lead on Lap 33 and pulled away. The win for Johnson was his third for the season and 12th of his career.

Perrotte, looking for his first win since the ‘04 season, would have to settle for second over Sheppard, Jeff Trombley and points leader, Ken Tremont.

Londonderry, Vt. Rookie Rob Langevin won his second 25-Lap Sportsmen feature of the year, taking advantage of Scott Duell’s misfortune.

Duell had passed early race leader Dave DePaulo on Lap 12 and appeared to be on his way to his first win when engine trouble sidelined him on Lap 17. Langevin then held off a late-race challenge from Ken Anatriello to take his second win.

Anatriello’s second place was a career best over Mike Tholin, who is making a late season charge for the points championship. Mike Ketchum and Dave DePaulo rounded out the Top Five.

Kale Groff won the special 35-Lap Twin State Series Budget Sportsmen race. Groff drove around Mike Visconti coming down the front stretch on Lap 24 then held off five-time winner Paul Dunham to capture his first career win.

Angela Hoard crossed the line third ahead of Frank Hoard Jr. and Gary Siemons.

The 25-Lap Pro-Street Stock feature also saw a first-time winner in Darryl Carl. Carl, known for his success as an ice racer, took the lead at the drop of the Green Flag and led all 25 laps holding off three-time winner Kim Duell in the process.

Duell’s second place finish brings him within eight points of current points leader, Lori Cary, who crossed the finish line third, ahead of Vinny Santoro and Dan Madigan.

Ballston Spa’s Mike Ostrander won his second Limiteds feature of the year. Ostrander started 11th in the race and was running second when leader Nick Lussier spun out on Lap 14.

Ostrander then held off five-time winner Jim Monroe Jr. to win the 20-lap race. Mark Burch, Mike Minick and Rich Burke completed the Top Five.

Phil DeFiglio remained undefeated in the 6-cylinder Mini-Stock class as he took win No. 16. Brette Osgood was the first 4-cylinder across the line.

Racing continues this week (Friday, Aug. 31) with the previously postponed “Seventy-Sixer”, a 76-Lap Sportsmen feature. All other regular divisions will be competing as well. Race time is 6:45 p.m.
