Ken Tremont, Jr. continued his dominance of the Albany-Saratoga Speedway with his third win in a row and fifth of the season as he took the CVRA.com AAA Northway 100 last Friday night.
Don Ackner and Frank Hoard raced for the lead for the first three laps before Ackner gained the advantage after a Lap 3 restart.
Jack Johnson, moving up quickly from his 7th starting spot, was running third on Lap 10 when he shot by both the second and first-place cars into the lead.
While Johnson was setting the pace, Tremont was coming from deep in the pack. Though he started 18, he broke into the Top 5 by Lap 16. Don Ronca spun out on Lap 22 bringing out the second Caution of the race.
During this Caution, Bobby Varin, substituting for Brett Hearn, pulled the No. 4 into the pits and was done for the night. When the race restarted, Tremont was running third and immediately went to work on Jeff Trombley, who was now running second. Tremont made the pass for second on Lap 30 and only three laps later made his way around Johnson for the lead.
Johnson’s good run came to an end when his car broke on Lap 35. Tremont opened up a big lead as Trombley and Matt DeLorenzo battled for second during mid-race laps. Dave Camara, a former Speedway champion, filling in for Matt Sheppard in the Randy Ross No. 44 came from the 22 starting spot and took over second place on Lap 61, but nobody was going to catch Tremont as he crossed the finish line three seconds ahead of Camara for his 48th career win at the track. DeLorenzo held on to third ahead of A.J. Romano and Jim Davis. Davis was later disqualified for coming up light on the post-race scales, putting Trombley in fifth.
The Sportsmen Division, along with the Pro-Streets and Limiteds, had double features as a result of rain the previous Friday.
The first Sportsmen feature saw Rob Langevin win his first-ever Sportsmen feature. Langevin, a rookie in this division, started fifth and eventually caught race leader Dave Peek on Lap 13. The two battled side-by-side for two laps before Langevin came away with the lead and the victory. Peek came home second ahead of Mike Ketchum, Ken Anatriello and Chris Busta.
In the second Sportsmen race, Mike Ketchum won his first race at the Malta Speedway. Ketchum drove around Tim Hartman on Lap 9 and survived three late-race restarts to post his first win. Hartman, filling in for an absent Dustin Delaney, finished second over Mark Kislowski, Jack Gentile and Josh Hohenforst.
In the first Pro-Street Stock feature, current high-point man Kim Duell passed Jeff Washburn on Lap 18 and cruised to his third win of the year. Washburn barely held off Lori Cary for second at the finish line.
Not to be outdone, Lori Cary came back and won her third feature of the year in the second Pro-Street Stock feature. Cary passed Kevin VanChance for the lead on Lap 12 and held off Jimmy Eaton late in the race. Eaton was second at the finish over Dan Madigan.
Tommy Primeau, Jr. won his first Limited feature ever in their first of their two races. Primeau had started sixth and held off Nick Lussier by a scant 0.261 second for the win as Lussier barely held off Mike Ostrander by about the same time-frame.
In the second Limited race, Jim Monroe, Jr. took the lead before the half way point and held on for his fifth win of the year. Ken Conroy and Dan Petronis followed him across the Finish Line.
In the combined 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder Mini-Stock feature, Phil DeFiglio was the overall winner with Brett Osgood being the first 4-cylinder across the line.
Racing resumes this Friday, August 10, with all divisions competing as well as the Budget Sportsmen. Race time is 6:45p.m.
