Director/actor J.J. Buechner believes the popular musical comedy about five nuns from Hoboken, New Jersey who find themselves in an unholy mess is the perfect choice for the Local Actors Guild of Saratoga’s first full-length theater production.
“We wanted to do old-fashioned musicals and crowd pleasers,” Buechner said. “This is something most families and adults can enjoy.”
Since “Nunsense” only requires a small cast, adapts to any space and is appropriate for almost every age group, Buechner said he knew it would serve as a good starter for the association. It didn’t hurt that a few of the actors have performed in the play before.
Folks can check out “Nunsense” at 2 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, and at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 at the Dee Sarno Theater at the Arts Center in Saratoga Springs. Tickets are $20 for adults and $18 for students and seniors.
The show’s performers are all locals, hailing from Saratoga Springs, Wilton, Gansevoort and Glens Falls. In fact, Sr. Hubert is played by DBA President Dawn Oesch.
Practices for the play began in the beginning of September, and Oesch said the cast has been meeting at least four times each week. The production marks an unusual and unintentional milestone for Oesch, who has been acting for about 20 years; this will be her twelfth time playing a nun.
“It’s an entertaining evening. The perfect release to a stressful week,” Oesch said. “You’ll laugh until your insides hurt and hear five great voices.”
Buechner recommends that people purchase their tickets in advance because the small theater may sell out quickly. He said he hopes to see at least 500 people during the production’s run.
“It’s funny from beginning to end,” he said of the play. “Plus, a guy playing a nun is worth the price of admission alone.”
