Dawn Oesch, president of the DBA and owner of The Candy Company, said a customer came into her store last year with a bag from North Hampton, Mass. and said she thought it would be a good idea for this downtown.
Oesch proposed this new promotion to the board of directors and the first “Bag Day” is now approaching.
The 20 participating businesses started handing the 5,000 bags out on Thursday, Nov. 29 during the Victorian Streetwalk and can be picked up until Dec. 7. On “Bag Day”, Dec. 8, customers can bring their bag to the businesses and get 20 percent off any one item that fits in the bag from each store or get a special discount at participating restaurants.
Oesch said it is a local appreciation day. She was pleased with the mix of corporate businesses like GAP and Ann Taylor Loft, as well as locally owned businesses like Symmetry Gallery and Saratoga Soles.
She said if there are things people might want from a particular store, they can wait until Dec. 8 to get a discount on it. She said people can make a day of it by shopping and getting a deal at the restaurants.
“What a better time to get a deal than during the holiday season,” she said.
Oesch said she thinks the DBA will continue this next year and will catch on to members that didn’t participate.
“If you are not involved you missed out,” Oesch said.
