The program previously took part on the first Thursday of every month, but has been changed to try to accommodate more people checking out the galleries involved.
Leigh Ollman, regrant administrator at the Art Council, said the First Saturday program is a nice way to start your Saturday night. Doors at the participating galleries open at 5 p.m. and give an opportunity for artists to have receptions, performances or other events.
“It’s a time for people to come enjoy all the culture and art the city has to offer,” Ollman said.
On Saturday, Dec. 1 the Saratoga County Arts Council is hosting an “After First Saturday” event featuring a special performance called Improve at The Arts Center. The show is going to be hosted by Jed Mills, according to Ollman. The show begins at 8 p.m. at The Dee Sarno Theater and tickets cost $12.
The National Museum of Dance and other galleries have joined the program. One gallery – Feast Gallery - is having it’s grand opening for the event with photographs by Harry Wirtz.
Ollman said there was a month or so hiatus of the program when it was transitioning into the First Saturday Arts Night.
“We are steadily building a buzz about it,” she said. “Our goal is to have it be a regular thing for families to do.”
She said visitors of the program can participate in a raffle to win two free passes to Proctor’s Theater too. She said if you visit each site, your name is entered in the raffle.
Ollman said most galleries in Saratoga participate in the program.
“People should come experience art in all its forms,” she said. “It’s a great way to spend time with the family.”

rst Saturday Arts Night Program:
Over six years ago the Saratoga County Arts Council worked with galleries and businesses in downtown Saratoga Springs to launch the First Thursday gallery exhibition program. The goal was to coordinate artist receptions and gallery openings on the same evening, so that art lovers could sample the local offerings in one concentrated event.
In the intervening period, the arts scene has grown exponentially in Saratoga Springs. Broadway, once the sole site of exhibition space, is now sandwiched between a vibrant Beekman Street Arts District, and the Spring Street Gallery. Additionally, there is a greater awareness now of the importance of local galleries to the overall cultural scene in Saratoga Springs, and of the role the arts play in the local economy as well.
In light of these changes, artists and gallery managers felt it was important to revitalize the art-walk program. Following a series of meetings that included gallerists, business-owners, media professionals, and arts advocates, Saratoga Springs’ First Thursday was re-launched and has evolved into what is now the First Saturday Arts Night.
