Walter J. Mooney, Jr. passed away peacefully at the Glens Falls Hospital on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008.

He was 87.

Born in Albany NY, Feb. 22, 1920, Walter was the son of the late Bess (Coburn) and Walter J. Mooney Sr. After graduating from Albany High School, and he was a graduate of the second graduating class of Siena College, Loudonville, NY. He served his country during WWII as Sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Walter married Dolores Shields, his beloved wife of 65 years. They were joined in marriage by Father Vincent Devine from Siena College. They made their homes in Loudonville and Ballston Lake, spending wonderful summers in Lake George and Saratoga Springs. He was president of Ballston Knitting Co., in Ballston Spa, NY and Mt. Airy, NC. Walter was a long time member of The University Club and The 50’s Group in Albany, Wolfert’s Roost Country Club, the Lake George Club and The Lake Placid Club. An avid racing fan, Walter loved watching the horses from his Clubhouse Box F7 at the finish line of Saratoga Racetrack. He was often seen having lunch with his friends at Mother Goldsmith’s, formerly in downtown Saratoga. He found enjoyment from Dandy, his pony and Honey, his Kerry Blue terrier. He tended his vegetable garden, taking pride in his tomato harvest each year. Most important to Walter was his family.

He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, a caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather, whose love, protection, and laughter will be greatly missed.

Along with his parents, Walter was predeceased by his daughter, Patricia. He is survived by his wife Dolores, their three children and their spouses: Barbara Deuel and her husband, Bill, of Ballston Lake, NY; Walter J. Mooney III and his wife, Linda, of Mt. Airy, NC; James W. Mooney Sr. and his wife, Susan, of Cleverdale, NY. “Pa Mooney” is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Billy Deuel and Michelle Pacquette; Deborah and John Koubek; James & Marci Deuel; Jeffrey and Jennifer Deuel; Walter and Scarlett Mooney IV; James W. Mooney Jr. and Bryn-Erinn Mooney. In addition, Walter had nine great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to all of the caregivers who enabled Walter to continue to stay in his own home during the last year of his life, and to the doctors and nurses at Glens Falls Hospital who did the utmost to insure his comfort.

Relatives and friends called on Wednesday, at the William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY (584-5373).

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, at the funeral home with Father Francis DuBois officiating.

Burial followed in the Mooney Mausoleum at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, NY.
