Saratoga Springs – Gladys Ruth (Porter) Onody, 87, entered into eternal rest in the early morning hours on April 20, 2008 at Wesley Nursing Home. During her life she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and teacher.
Born October 8, 1920 in Olean, NY, Gladys was the daughter of the late Laurence and Frances Porter. She grew up in Buffalo, NY and married Edward S. Onody on September 27, 1939.
Their marriage of 55 years was filled with raising a family of three, traveling across the United States in their travel trailer visiting family and the many landmarks of the country that they loved. They also lived in various locations across New York State, including Andes, Hancock, Saratoga Springs and Oneonta.
After several years of being a stay-at-home mom, in 1968 Gladys returned to college at The College of St. Rose, Albany, NY. She completed her Bachelors of Arts and Masters Degree in Education at the State University College at Oneonta, NY in 1972. She taught fourth grade for 12 years at the Unadilla Elementary School in Unadilla, NY, retiring from teaching in 1984.
Gladys was predeceased by her husband Edward S. Onody (former Principal, Saratoga Springs Senior High School and former Superintendent, Oneonta City School District); her parents, Laurence and Frances Porter and her two sisters, Muriel Porter and Marjorie Koelsch.
Survivors include her son, Laurence E. Onody of Saratoga Springs, NY; two daughters, Gail (Mike) Veitch of Saratoga Springs and Amy (David) Harden of Chesapeake, VA.; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Stephanie) Veitch, Gregg (Jennifer) Veitch, Paul (Kate) Veitch all of Saratoga Springs, Mary (Dan) Austin of North East, Maryland, Michael B. Veitch also of Saratoga Springs, Katharine, Lauren, Sally, Margaret and John Edward Onody Harden of Chesapeake, VA and eleven great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service and burial is planned at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made in her name to the Saratoga County Children’s Committee, PO Box 1254, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
