Members of the Downtown Business Association pitched the idea months back at a meeting, stating that the businesses above the west side didn't get the publicity that the east side businesses get.
Signs have been in place on the east side of Broadway for about a decade, leading tourists down side streets to shops that would otherwise be missed by those who don't know they are there.
“We listened to the members concerns, and this seemed to be one of the big ones so we worked on fixing this issue,” DBA President Dawn Oesch said. “We are excited for both the signs and the stores that are getting the publicity.”
Stores paid $95 to have their name placed on the sign, which was painted by local artist Phil Steffans who works for the Saratoga Springs Department of Public Works. There is still room for more stores to be added and any store can be added, not just DBA members, Oesch said.
Oesch, Commissioner of Finance John Franck, and Commissioner of Public Works Anthony “Skip” Scirocco unveiled the signs Thursday afternoon.
"Growing up in Saratoga, I’ve watched the west side change dramatically. It used to be the dark side, but now the sun is shining over here, and these signs are will give the stores more exposure," Franck said.
Scirocco said he believes the signs are a good idea for Broadway.
“The locations of the signs are great. I didn't really think about it before. I was glad to work with Commissioner Frank to get this project done. They really stand out,” he said.
