Elizabeth M. Vernon

Saratoga Springs, NY – Elizabeth M. Vernon, 84, of Wesley Health Care Center passed away Friday night, August 22, 2008 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born on October 25, 1923 in Oswego, New York she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Carroll. Elizabeth graduated from Oswego High School and attended the former State Teachers College at Oswego, now S.U.N.Y. Oswego, graduating in 1945. She received her Masters Degree in Reading Education from Columbia University, and wasan elementary school teacher for over thirty years, mostly in the Sachem Central School District, Long Island, NY.

In 1946, Elizabeth married Walter C. Vernon, her husband for 46 years, who passed away on September 10, 1992. They resided in Gloucester City, NJ, and Blue Point, NY, before moving to Fonda, NY in 1987. Elizabeth was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the New York State Retired Teachers’ Association, and was a volunteer for the Frothingham Free Library in Fonda and the Wesley Health Care Center pre-school program. For many years, she was the Director of Volunteer Services at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Long Island, New York.

Survivors include her three children: Joseph Walter Vernon of Hadley, NY; Margaret Marietta Vernon of Fonda, NY; and Walter John Vernon of Severna Park, MD. She is also survived by five grandchildren.

Relatives and friends gathered on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes in Saratoga Springs. A funeral service followed at the funeral home

Burial will be held in September 2008 at Riverside Cemetery in Oswego, NY.
