Sports - Delorenzo wins second of '08 at Speedway

Matt Delorenzo of Voorheesville drove to a convincing win, his first since opening night, in Friday night’s Modified feature at the Albany Saratoga Speedway.

Delorenzo has had everything go his way this season at the Fonda Speedway where he has won five times already but, since his opening night win at the Malta oval, the normally consistent Delorenzo has struggled with just two third place finishes to show for his efforts. Last Friday, he started the 35-Lap feature from the outside of the 4th row while front row starter John Proctor took the lead at the drop of the Green. Dave Camara shot by Proctor on Lap 2 at the same time Delorenzo was quickly making his way through the Top Five taking over the second position on Lap 4. Delorenzo spent the next 10 laps looking for a way by the Camara #26, finally slipping past on Lap 14. The only Caution Flag in the race flew on Lap 19 when Jimmy Cottrell and Tony Kowalchuk came together in Turn 4. On the restart, Delorenzo pulled away with his BBL Construction sponsored #3D and left Camara to fend off the pack. Camara gave up second to Jeff Trombley on Lap 24 and lost third to Track Champion Kenny Tremont with just tow to go.

Delorenzo crossed the finish line 2 ½ seconds ahead of Trombley for his fourth career win at the track. Tremont finished third ahead of Camara and Brett Hearn.

Kory Standstedt won his first Sportsman division feature ever last Friday night and must have really enjoyed it as he returned this week and won his second race in a row. Sandstedt of Canaan, NY, started 9th but was sitting third behind leader Joe Santoro and Josh Hohenforst on a Lap 13 restart, when he really made his presence known. Sandstedt drove past Hohenforst on 15 and by Lap 17 was side-by-side with Santoro for the race lead. One lap later, Sandstedt completed the pass on the outside and drove to his second win. Santoro, Hohenforst, Mike Ketchum and Ken Antriello completed the Top Five.

Frank Corradi battled last week’s winner Cullen Howe and came away with his first career win in the 25-Lap Budget Sportsman feature. The race was marred by two multi-car wrecks before a lap was completed but, once underway, it went nonstop to the finish. Corradi took the lead on Lap 5 from Howe but Howe wouldn’t go away as he repeatedly challenged Corradi for the win.

Howe would eventfully have to settle for second with D.J. Brundige, Frank Hoard III and Don Miller following him across the line.

Lori Langevin is on a roll in the Pro-Stock class, winning for the second week in a row and 5th time this season. Langevin moved up from the fifth row patiently while Phil DeFiglio and Kevin VanChance duked it out for the lead. Langevin put her car on the outside groove just like last week and drove around VanChance on Lap 17 for the lead. Despite late race challenges from Rob Yetman, Langevin held on for career win #17. Following Langevin and Yetman were Kim Duell, VanChance and Walt Brownell.

The Limited division put on a great show in their 20-Lap race. Teammates Mark Lester and Ken Conroy battled for the lead nearly the entire race with Lester barely nipping Conroy by a bumper at the Finish Line. Mike Ostrander, Dan Petronis and John Filarecki completed the Top Five.

In other racing last Friday, Jason Dickson won the Mini-Stock race and Mike Kiser won the traveling Central New York Mini-Sprint feature.

Racing returns this Friday, August 1, with a 100-Lap Modified feature on tap as well as racing in all other divisions. Race time is 6:45 p.m.
