The play interweaves the plots from several Brothers Grimm fairytales and includes classic fairytale characters, taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella, Director JJ Buechner said. These characters are tied together through a baker and his wife and their quest to start a family.
“These stories all encompass a theme of happily ever after, but the purpose of the play is to show what happened the day after the fairy tales have ended,” he said.
Buechner, who recently directed the Local Actors Guild of Saratoga’s production of The Graduate and Dog Sees God: Confessions of a teenage blockhead, said the play has been a huge undertaking, but he is very excited to direct the show – one which he has wanted to direct for a long time.
The cast includes veterans like Haley Beauregard as Little Red Riding Hood, Ceri Boersman as Florinda, David Dixon as the Narrator, Molly McGrath as Cinderella and Dawn Oesch as The Witch. New to the HMT stage are Marc Andrzejewski as the Baker, Rachel Campbell as Sleeping Beauty and Barbara Miner as Rapunzel.
Buechner said the show has a huge following because of the story and they expect sell out crowds in the 496 seat Spa Little Theatre throughout the scheduled performance dates.
HMT was founded by Jonathan Foster and Susan Miller in the 55 seat theatre at Caffe Lena’s in 1985, and started performing in the Spa Little Theatre by the following year. Over the years, the company has performed such classic plays as Charlottes Web, Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp and The Wizard of Oz.
Stacie Mayette, General Manager at HMT, said the success of the theatre has largely relied upon the dedication of the people who donate their time and work tirelessly to make the performances come to life. She added people will often tell her how impressed they are by the quality of plays.
“Who needs New York City when you can stay here and enjoy great theatre,” she said.
Mayette, who has been with HMT for 20 years, said the company is thrilled to be back for its 24th season and is already starting to map out plans for the 25th season.
As for this season, HMT will perform A Little House Christmas and The Santaland Diaries in December, Beyond Therapy in February and Enchanted April in April. The theatre company will also host The Shuster Series of Play Readings and a Saratoga Christmas with the McKrells.
Into the Woods will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Oct. 10 to Oct. 26. Ticket prices are $24 and $27 per person and an optional dinner package is available at The Mouzon House for an additional $26 per person plus tax and gratuity.
