Saratoga Springs – Mary Helena (O’Malley) Kmen passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa. She was 104.

Born on May 29, 1904 in Saratoga Springs, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary Ann McGuire O’Malley. She attended Saratoga Springs High School and played on the basketball team during her junior and senior years, graduating in 1922, then attended Albany Business College. Mary worked as a bookkeeper at the Saratoga Drink Hall and MacFinn Drug Store and was a cashier for four years at the Congress Theater. She served on the Saratoga Springs Board of Education from 1950 to 1970 and was president during the construction of the Caroline St., Division St. and the Jr./Sr. High Schools. She was a member of Court McLaughlin 422 Catholic Daughters of America since 1933, serving two terms as their Grand Regent, and was a member, past president and county chairwomen of the American Legion Adirondack Post 70 Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Henry J. Kmen, who died Dec. 20, 1968; one son, Michael K. Kmen, who died May 25, 2004; five

brothers, William, Robert, John, Edward and Martin O’Malley and two sisters, Catherine O’Malley and Agnes Tethers.

She is survived by two sons, Henry E. (wife Betty) Kmen of Scotia, William M. (wife Nancy) Kmen of Porter Corners; two daughters, Mary Ann (husband Max) Hermann of Bow, NH, and Eileen (husband Keith) Castell of Wappinger Falls, NY; one daughter-in-law, Susan (Kirkpatrick) Kmen of Saratoga Springs; one sister-in-law, Mamie O’Malley of Malta; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grand-children and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friend gathered on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 at Our Lady’s Chapel in the parish center at St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Ave. in Saratoga Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated immediately following in the Church.

Burial followed in the family plot at St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Ave. in Saratoga Springs.

Memorials may be made in her name to Maplewood Manor Resident Fund, 149 Ballston Ave., Ballston Spa, NY 12020.
