Born and raised in Hanover, New Hampshire, he was the son of Irving and Ina Douglas.
Mr. Douglas was a graduate of Burlington High School (1954), Cornell University (1958), and Albany Law School (1961). Having been employed for a year and a half as an agent with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service in Albany, he came to Greenwich in 1962 to practice law with the firm of VanNess and Russell, which became VanNess, Russell and Douglas in 1964. Mr. Douglas has served as Washington County Probation Officer and Assistant District Attorney for many years. In 1993, he was appointed as Administrative Law Judge for the State of New York, and served on the Unemployment Insurance Appeal Board until his retirement in 1995.
He also was a member and Director of the Battenkill Country Club, and President, Zone Chairman and Treasurer of the Greenwich Lions Club. He was a member of Ashlar Lodge F&AM, and the Greenwich Elks Lodge.
He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Kenneth of Burlington, VT, Clifton of Houston, TX, and Rodger of San Diego, CA.
Survivors include 4 children, Robert II of Greenfield Center, NY, Christina Douglas Dalldorf of Greensboro, NC, James of Clifton Park, NY, and Sarah of Malta, NY; 2 brothers, Richard of Bullhead City, AZ and Walter of Cambridge, VT.
Friends may call on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main Street in Greenwich, NY.
