He was 87.
Born Jan. 3, 1922 in Watertown, NY he was the son of the late Percy E. and Melrose Paul King. He was educated in Orono, Maine and then attended the Maine Maritime Academy. He was an Army veteran from 1943 to 1945, serving in the European Theatre and was part of the invasion of Normandy. Robert worked as a carpenter in Kennebunkport, Maine with many of his friends and then for W.J. Grande & Sons in Saratoga Springs. He moved to Saratoga Springs in 1942 and married his sweetheart, Ruth M. Bennett. They were married for 57 years until her death on Feb. 13, 1999. Robert was a loyal member of the CRAFT club walking group, the Gurtler Bros. Post 420. He was a third degree member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus, a member of Saratoga Assembly 745 fourth degree Knights of Columbus and a member of its Assembly Color Corps. He was a faithful parishioner for many years of St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by one sister, Persis Manson.
Survivors include four sons, Robert J. King and his wife Fran, Richard J. King, all of Saratoga Springs, Gerard J. King and his wife Marlene of Middle Granville, Michael P. King and his wife Elizabeth of Greenville, SC; many grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a very loving dear friend, Ines Schultheis of Gansevoort.
There will be no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this morning, Friday, Jan. 30, 2009 at 11 a.m. at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs. Military honors will follow.
Burial will be private.
Members of the Knights of Columbus and Assembly Color Corps will meet at the church Friday morning at 10:45 a.m.
