The Saratoga Springs Rotary Home and Garden Show kicks off the annual event on Friday, Feb. 27.

The show is the major fundraiser for the Rotary Club, which benefits many charitable organizations both locally and internationally. The Rotary Club supports the Salvation Army, Franklin Community Center, Habitat for Humanity as well as countless other non-profit organizations.

"People are hurting right now. We try to help them keep their feet on the ground," said Ian Morton, chairman for the Home and Garden Show. "We are all about helping people. It's an honor to get out in the community knowing that we are doing something good."

This year, more than 100 vendors will set up shop at the Saratoga Springs City Center from Friday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, March 1 to show the various home and garden services and products that are provided through local companies.

"We got off to a slow start this year with the economy as bad as it is, but we got everything together and now have a waiting list for vendors," Morton said.

Each year, about 6,000 people attend the show and past years have proven to be a big success for the club. For visitors to the show, there are raffles and door prizes as well as a chance to win a 40-inch flat screen TV.

"We have a lot of events and seminars going on all weekend that we feel the public will really enjoy," Morton said.

Hour-long seminars will be taking place throughout Saturday and Sunday. Seminar topics include: tankless water heaters, preparing to finish your basement, modular homes make sense, reverse mortgages, what to look for when hiring a contractor, saving energy without spending cash, power your home with the sun, and how to get the perfect paint finish for your room or wall.

"We encourage everyone to come out and support Saratoga Springs Rotary Club and all of the groups we support," Morton said.

Admission is $6 for adults, $1 for kids ages 5 to 12 and children under 5 are free. All proceeds will support local causes, student scholarships and international humanitarian projects such as Posies for Polio, an initiative to help victims of Polio in third-world countries.

In recent years, the Rotary Club's Home and Garden Show has raised more than $100,000 for non-profit groups and scholarships. In the fiscal year ending in June 2008, the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club awarded major gifts of more than $19,000 to the Salvation Army in Saratoga Springs and more than $11,000 to Shelters of Saratoga, along with additional local contributions of more than $20,000. Rotary Club also awarded 14 area high school seniors with scholarships worth more than $44,000.

The Rotary Club is an international organization which consists of business professionals worldwide who have united to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards and help to build good will and peace around the world.

It was founded in 1905 and today has more than 1.5 million members in 33,000 Rotary Clubs in 200 countries worldwide.

"This is a time when more people than ever need our services. By coming to the Home and Garden Show everyone has a chance to help out those in need," Morton said.

The Rotary Home and Garden Show opens its doors at from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information visit www.saratogahomeandgarden.com or call (518) 812-5051.
