Singer/songwriter Bob Warren will showcase songs from his new CD "Only the Message Mattered" about civil rights leader Susan B. Anthony at two different events in Saratoga Springs on Saturday,
Feb. 14.

Warren and his fellow performers who include cellist Monica Roach and singer/narrators Brittany Rivers, Barbara Skiff and Rebecca Rogers will hold their first performance of the day during the Saratoga County League of Women Voters celebration of Anthony's birthday at the Gideon Putnam Hotel.

Warren along with his ensemble will perform four songs off the album, which he wrote on behalf of Anthony and her cause. The theme for the event, like the album, is "Only the Message Mattered" and will feature a portrayal of Anthony by Barbara Blaisdell of Rochester, NY.

"Far from being the 'love-starved spinster' as portrayed by her detractors, there is evidence that Miss Anthony was quite humorous, witty, and warm, with many gentleman callers. She was taken on carriage rides and to dances. But in the end, she rejected all suitors. This performance will feature the softer side of this passionate woman who has been misunderstood or ignored for too long," Patricia Nugent, event organizer, said in a press release.

Relatives of Anthony will also be in attendance to showcase her family artifacts, which Warren said he is particularly excited about. In addition to performances, attendees will receive a breakfast buffet, a copy of Warren's CD and a Susan B. Anthony dollar.

"This performance was really instrumental in me being able to complete the album because with finances and budgets being what they are at the moment, I was debating the wisdom of putting it out, but they kind of provided the vehicle by guaranteeing that so many albums would be sold the day of its release," Warren said.

People will also be able to purchase additional CD's, of which a portion of sales will go directly to the League of Women Voters educational fund, Warren said.

"I am hoping that people who attend the luncheon that day, particularly people from other areas, will be interested in having this performance in their communities," he said.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost of attending is $50 and is open to the public, but reservations must be made by Friday, Feb. 6. For more information, visit www.lwvsaratoga.org.

If you happen to miss the first performance, the ensemble will also be at Caffe Lena to present the full performance at 3 p.m. as part of The Dance Flurry Folk Oasis. The cost is $10 or free with a Dance Flurry wrist band.

"People will have a nice option between the two performances," Warren said.

The album is of a song cycle/narrative Warren wrote for a production titled "Only the Message Mattered," which uses Anthony's own words in narrative and song to tell her story and her struggle to ensure equal rights for women.

"I hope what people take away from every performance is a desire to read about her [Anthony] and the movement of women who spearheaded the women's right's movement and brought things to where they are today," Warren said.
