Sports - My Prescription

Vote 0 Votes Saratoga News & Events
A couple of years ago, my wife and I attended a performance at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. All during the first half of the show and the intermission, I couldn't help but notice an older woman seated in the row behind us who kept looking at me with this puzzled expression on her face. I mentioned it to my wife and asked her if the woman was someone I should know and say hello to. I didn't want to be rude.  She looked over her shoulder at the woman and told me that she didn't recognize her either.
At the end of the show, we all stood to leave and as we were exiting our row, the older woman walks up to me, takes me by the arm in an overly familiar way and says "I sure wish you were still my doctor!"  Initially, I was at a loss for words, which as you might have guessed, was way out of character for me. I fumbled for a reply trying to be very polite and tell her that I was not her doctor nor anyone else's. By the time I finally composed myself, my wife and friends were laughing like crazy at my dilemma and began making comments that I will not repeat at this time.

The point of my telling you this story is that as a result, in a very tight circle of people, I became known as Doctor Dick.

So, as Doctor Dick, I am going to take the liberty of prescribing to all of you what the elderly woman at SPAC was wishing that I could do for her and that is my cure to all that ails you.

Needless to say, it's been a long winter. Long.....cold.....and seemingly forever white. On top of all of this, we have somehow managed to get through the two-year-long process of the Presidential election, the holiday season, New Year's hangover, anticipation of filing out taxes, a furry little critter out in Pennsylvania telling us that there is still another six weeks of long.....cold....and seemingly forever white weather facing us and all of this topped off with the gloomy news concerning our economy day after day after day.

So, here's what I want you to do. First, go to you bedroom and take off your long johns and put on a pair of gym shorts. Come on, stay with me! Now, go to the front or rear door of your house, probably rear so fewer people will see you. Kick off your shoes and socks. Come on, you can do this! Open the door, step outside and take a bare foot run through that soft white snow that is covering your yard. Doesn't matter if it's only a couple of inches or a foot deep, just jump in and take a trot around your yard for a minute or two. Bring a friend, you're going to want to share this with someone.

Now I know you think I've finally gone over the edge and lost my mind.  Wrong! Once you have returned to your warm kitchen and caught your breath, you will become aware of how clear your brain has become.  Suddenly, you will notice that all that dust and smog that was clogging up your head since October is magically gone. And you will have the biggest and broadest smile on your face that you've ever enjoyed before swallowing Doctor Dick's painless pill. And on top of all of this, it's free!  Mother Nature keeps on providing. What more could you ask for!  You won't believe how good you are going to feel once you've tried this little bit of medicine.  Before you know it, you'll want to do it again....well, maybe.

But! You've got to do this soon. Believe it or not, spring is really just around the corner and then you'll have to wait until next winter to test my remedy for the mid-winter blues.

Come on! Are you ready? Shorts on....shoes and socks off....take a run. I know you're going to love it.

And oh yeah! Don't forget to let Dr. Dick know how it went.

And the answer to your question is YES, I have done it more than once.

See you outdoors!
