Allen W. Strack
Saratoga Springs - Allen W. Strack, formerly of Saratoga Springs and Lake George, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at Saratoga Hospital after a long illness.
He was 79.
Born May 10, 1929 in Spring Valley, NY, he was the son of the late Ernest and Elinor Watson Strack. Al graduated ROTC in 1951 from Cornell School of Electrical Engineering in Ithaca, NY and served as a 2nd Lt. at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio during the Korean War. He worked for the General Electric Service Shops in Los Angeles and Chicago and also managed the Shop in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Al was later employed as a manager of the General Electric Large Motor and Generator Department in Schenectady.
Al was active in both church and community work. He was a life-long Episcopalian, serving at various times on the vestries of the Calvary Church in Burnt Hills and Christ Church in Schenectady where he was also a treasurer and warden. He was a communicant of St. George's Church in Schenectady and St. James Church in Lake George where he served on the organ committee. Al was also a member of the Schenectady Rotary, treasurer of the Lake George Dunham's Bay Association as well as an active member in the Schenectady Stockade Art Show. He will be remembered by his friends for his winemaking, his limericks he composed for friends, boating on Lake George, his infallible bridge playing, his friendly face at the election polling place, and his golfing with clubs that always seemed too short. His evident enjoyment of other people and his sense of humor were his trademarks.
In addition to his parents, Al was predeceased by his son Rick and his daughter Marno.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ellie Bierly Strack; two brothers, Conrad Strack of Arlington, VA and Charles Strack of Lakewood, NJ; his daughter-in-law Theresa Strack of Bethany, CT and a niece, nephews and cousins.
Ellie wants to extend special thanks to Dr. Kevin Dooley of Wilton Family Medicine, the Medical Oncology-Hematology staff in Saratoga as well as the other medical personnel who were so helpful.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11 a.m. in St. James Episcopal Church, 172 Ottawa St., Lake George, NY 12845. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of Saratoga Springs.
