They sweat out pain, both mental and physical, and embrace blood as a sign of toughness. Fueled by a primitive and vicious passion they train to push for immortality and a raised hand. The world silent, the face stoic for fear it will betray a weakness, the wrestler stands. Endurance will decide the contest. Which gladiator can impose his will upon the other more thoroughly - he triumphs.
There are no excuses for a loss, only the goal to work harder. The challenge crescendos as the match continues. Nine minutes of dolorous wonder surrounded by anxiety and relief or humiliation can bring anyone to their knees. But the ability to roar a silent battle cry and make a grab for victory signifies a fighter. To hold a victory and lash it to yourself is to climb Olympus and peer into Heaven without jealousy.
