The Saratoga Blue Knight midget ice hockey team fell in the Northeastern Midget Hockey League (NEMHL) Division II final for the second straight year after losing to the Albany Jr. River Rats on Sunday, March 15 at the Vernon Rink.
After losing to the Jr. River Rats 5-1 on Saturday, the Blue Knights
looked to make up for the loss by defeating Albany in the title game.
The Blue Knights got on the board first after captain Ben Olszewski
scored on Jr. River Rat goaltender Ned Torrico at 2:14 in the third period.
Albany responded at 10:00 in the third period, after Ryland VanPraag slipped a goal past Saratoga goalie Ryan Lynch to tie the match at 1-1.
With neither team scoring in the remaining minutes of the contest, the teams headed into a five minute overtime.
Matt Anderson eventually scored the game winner at 1:58 in overtime to win the NEMHL Division II title for Albany. The Saratoga loss left the Blue Knight players mourning their second defeat in the championship game in the last two years. In last year's title game Saratoga fell to the Griffin Flames in overtime.
The Blue Knights ended their NEMHL season at 20-16-6. Saratoga will now head to Cheektowaga to compete in the State Championships, March 20 - 22.
