Upon entering Green Pea Café, customers can expect to be greeted by name by owner Margaret Jones, or at least that's the atmosphere she is striving to have.
Formerly called the Greenwich Local Market, Green Pea Café had
maxed-out its space at 88 Main St., Greenwich and moved down the road
to 70 Main St. After opening in the new, larger location on March 4,
Jones said the finishing touch will be opening the café once the State
approves the proposals.
"The old location became sort of a hang-out, and it was crowded with three people. I want the same atmosphere with more room to sit down, eat and talk. I love being with people," Jones said.
As a child, Jones dreamed to own a corner store with a small-town feel where everyone knew each other and where the food came from.
She was motivated to open a local and organic food market in 2006 when her daughter was diagnosed with Celiac Disease which poses problems with wheat and gluten products.
"We had to do a lot of research and find places that sold special gluten-free foods. I became a health food convert at this time and decided to make it easier for everyone to access health foods and locally-grown products," Jones said.
The store opened in April 2006 and quickly became the place to go for fresh foods and organic products.
If a customer is looking for a specific product that Jones doesn't normally carry, she will take the extra step to special-order the product. Her main focus for the store, however, is locally-grown products.
"It's so important to support local farms and business. There are so many things available in and around Greenwich year round so we try to carry as many different products as possible as the seasons change," Jones said.
Jones supports more than 15 local farms by selling their products from milk to vegetables to peanut butter and bread.
The addition of the café makes Jones' dream come full circle to have a country market and hang-out spot.
"With about triple the space we had before and the seating area for customers, we've had rave reviews so far," she said. "It's a nice little spot to relax."
