Business - Local chiropractor treats more than just back pains

Sixty to 80 percent of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lives. For the most part, the pain will subside within three to five days after an injury. For some however, the pain is chronic and may interfere with day-to-day
activities.

While there are many at-home remedies for back pain, sometimes there's nothing left to do but get medical help. Instead of invasive surgery, which is the absolute last resort for back pain, many people opt to visit a chiropractor.

Dr. Pat Szurek has been a chiropractor for the past five years, and has spent the past three in Saratoga Springs. He graduated from LeMoyne College in 1998 and from the New York Chiropractic College in 2002.

Over time, Szurek has treated patients of all ages from infants to the elderly who are suffering from conditions stemming from the spine. While he may see similar cases on a regular basis, treatments are not always the same.

"What a lot of people don't understand is that each treatment is unique. I tailor a treatment to the patient and what their needs are. Every case is determined by the unique situation," he said.

Chiropractic medicine is a drug-free way to treat pain stemming from issues with the spine. Pain or injury can happen through the stress of daily living or from sudden accidents and cause the vertebrae to shift out of their proper place or affect the range of motion of the bones. This causes extra pressure to be put on the muscles, joints and nerves along the spinal chord.

"Typically, the body has the ability to heal itself, but when pain persists, I look to correct spinal misalignments which can cause nerve irritation, muscle spasms and pain," Szurek said.

Szurek treats more than just back problems as well. A person can be in pain for a wide variety of reason relating to the spine, he said. Other aliments could include pain in the arms, neck, shoulders and legs as well as sprains, whiplash, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and Arthritis.

One major factor that can cause back pain and other problems in the body is weight problems. Because this is such a common factor for back pain, Szurek has incorporated the only Federal Drug Administration-approved diet plan available.

Take Shape for Life (TSFL) is a diet plan that includes five meals provided by TSFL and one lean meal of choice per day to start. During this phase, about two to five pounds are lost per week. The second phase is to teach the patient to keep the weight off.

"The program really teaches people to eat properly and it can work for anyone. What's most important is to set a goal. When the goal is reached, it is time to learn to maintain the goal weight," Szurek said. "I've seen too many people lose weight and put it right back on."
Each Thursday at 5:30, Szurek holds a meeting in his office at 188 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs, to discuss Take Shape for Life and the benefits it offers.

Szurek is a native of Amsterdam, NY, and lives in Saratoga Springs with his wife, Jackie, and his new daughter, Olivia. He moved his practice from Church Street to Lake Avenue in December and has since expanded his practice.
