Yet another business in Saratoga Springs has made it a goal to make life easier for Saratogians.

Set to open on May 1, Spa Cleaners will offer their pick-up and delivery dry cleaning and laundry services to residents at 87 Railroad Place, The Lofts at 18 Division Street and across the City of Saratoga Springs.

Owner Tom Nigro is an Albany native and began a cleaning service in Boston 10 years ago which serves hotels, condominium and apartment complexes throughout the city. After proving successful in a large city, Nigro was looking for a reason to return to Saratoga Springs where his brother lives.

"I've wanted to get back here for years," he said. "After 15 years in Boston, I'm ready for something different, a different market. To open a business in Saratoga Springs is a great experience. No one is opening a business right now in this economy, so it's very exciting to be in a position to expand."

The home base for Spa Cleaners will be in Clifton Park where garments will be cleaned mended and altered at the customer's request.

"We will offer a number of different services, not just dry cleaning and washing. We include shoe repairs, wedding dress alterations and cleaning, leather and suede, rugs, you name it," Nigro said.

While the company gets off the ground in New York, Nigro and one other driver will be doing the grunt work with hopes to hire on a full staff once they have tested the waters.

"We have a full staff from managers to cleaners to drivers in Boston, so we are hoping to bring more on board in Saratoga also," he said.

According to Nigro, opening a full service dry cleaning and laundry business fills a specific need and is a growing industry.

"My business has grown from the ground up -- from zero to $1.5 million a year in Boston. The business as a whole is a $10 billion per year industry nationwide," he added.

In order to keep up with the times, Spa Cleaners will use all eco-friendly products, namely hydro-carbon for their dry cleaning.

"With government controls on chemicals and 'green' technology, you'd think that the business would contract, but in reality it's just getting bigger and more environmentally friendly," Nigro said.

Nigro attended Assumption College in Massachusetts and received a Bachelors degree in English Literature. After working for the New York Mercantile Exchange, he reached a point where he wanted to open his own business.

"I just wanted to do my own thing. After years of working hard, I knew the need was there for this service and I had the money to get it off the ground. It's been fantastic and this new venture in Saratoga Springs will be very exciting," Nigro said.
