Shoppers at Wilton Mall can get a taste of past fashions as they walk the corridors with a public art installation presented by the Saratoga Springs History Museum and the brand-new Empire Historic Arts.
When the project is complete, there will be six displays showing
vintage furniture and clothing from the Victorian years in Saratoga
Springs. These installations promote an upcoming exhibition at the
Saratoga Springs History Museum called "200 years of Fashion in
Saratoga Springs" curated by Michael B. Levinson beginning May 1 and
running through December.
"It is my hope to create historic-based public art installations that will be educating as well as visually stimulating," Levinson said. "We want to bring art to the community - that's what we are all about."
Empire Historic Arts is a not-for-profit organization that will raise money for public art installations in various places throughout the region.
"Because of the economy I can't afford to fund all of the public works of art that I'd like to. Through Empire Historic Arts, I can raise money for public art space without conflict in the political arena," Levinson added.
On April 25, Empire Historic Arts will be holding its first fundraiser at the Batcheller Mansion Inn from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The cocktail party will cost $50 per person or $90 per couple. Cocktail dress is required.
The mission of Empire Historic Arts is to create historic related public space installations to engage and educate the community.
With the first installation taking place at Wilton Mall, other upcoming projects include:
-Recreating pedestals at the base of a newly-exposed 19th century mirrors which have been hidden since at least the 1970's when a house was remodeled.
-Working to raise money to finance a historic wallpaper exhibit for the town of Athens, NY for May 2009
-Public art display in City Hall
-Forming a relationship with the Saratoga Springs History Museum to spread the word about upcoming exhibitions and events.
According to Jamie Parillo, executive director of the Saratoga Springs History Museum, after a slow and cold winter, he is excited for the traffic that he hopes Empire Historic Arts will bring to the museum.
"Getting the awareness out there that we are here is always important. You wouldn't believe the people who still don't know we are here," he said. "Through this installation at Wilton Mall, we've already reached out to a new demographic - teenagers. As we were setting up, kids would stop and ask what we were doing. If we can get younger folks in the museum they will be our future supporters here and elsewhere."
