On Tuesday, April 7, the Saratoga Job Fair Board of Directors hosted their fifth and perhaps most widely attended job fair at the City Center in downtown Saratoga Springs.
"There were a smaller amount of employers and exhibitors, so I didn't
expect the kind of turnout that we had. But there were a lot of
people," Danelle Healey, the president of the Saratoga Job Fair Board,
said. "I would guess at least 700 to 900 people [attended]. It was
probably one of the best that we've had."
Among the 39 employers present, the fair included AIM, First Investor's Corporation, Janitronics, Saratoga Hospital, Time Warner Cable, Ace Hardware, Experience Works, the US Air Force, Saratoga Bridges, Mildred Elley, Saratoga Springs City Schools, Nursefinders, AVON, Saratoga Gaming & Raceway and many more.
Also present at the fair were resume critiquing services, helping people to create better looking professional resumes to increase their chance of finding employment.
"The folks that were doing resume critiquing had a line out the door the entire day," Healey said. "From 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. we also had 15 minute intervals of seminars regarding how to do Web site blogs, how to search the help wanted, and how to improve your interviewing skills. The networking seminar was another one that was pretty popular."
Perhaps it's a sign of the times, but Healey indicated that she noticed a higher number of professional candidates than she usually sees at last Tuesday's job fair.
"I have to say out of all the job fairs I've ever been to, there was more of a professional level [present at the fair]. People actually took the time to put on not just a raggedy t-shirt and jeans, but to put on the tie, or a nice pullover. A work shirt with khakis or slacks," Healey said. "I would say less of the entry level people. More folks that maybe had been laid off or that were working for larger companies like the manufacturing industry."
But overall, Healey said that she received a wide variety of applications, ranging from administrative assistants and maintenance workers to cooking positions and dishwashers.
Roughly 15 people volunteered their time to help make the job fair a success, with Healey giving a big thanks to those such as Rick Marchant and Cindy Durfey, and all of the Saratoga Job Fair Board members for their support.
"The whole board did a great job," Healey said.
Panera Breads and Culligan Water generously supplied the fair with free food and water in exchange for a booth at the program, providing breakfast, lunch and snacks for fair goers.
For Healey, job fairs such as these are vital for employers and prospective employees in the area, especially during an economic climate such as this.
"It betters the community and it helps employers seek the right candidates," Healey said. "The way the economy is going, it's important during these trying times for us to hold a fair for whoever does have jobs open, so that they're able to advertise them and talk to people one on one."
