Spa City looks to cut $3 million from budget
Commissioner of Finance Kenneth Ivins Jr. is calling for nearly $3 million in budgetary cuts after Saratoga Springs City Council was forced to re-examine this year's budget after $1.89 million in expected VLT state aid was pulled, officials say. The Department of Public Works, Public Safety, the Mayor's Department, Recreation, Finance and Accounts are all targeted for the proposed cuts.
A few people in this country think that we have too many police, too many prisons and too much military, but other than keeping its citizens safe, what is the main purpose of our government?

Last week at the Saratoga Farmers' Market goat cheese vendor Jeff Bowers (Sweetspring Farm) introduced a wonderfully flavored bleu cheese. In honor of this new tantalizing product I went looking for a recipe I remembered from a fabulous small restaurant in "The Village" in New York City. The restaurant is long gone, but the memory and the recipe chef Philippe shared with me remains. The best part is this dish is relatively simple to make and yet gives one a five-star taste. You can use a wide range of farm steak cuts (filet mignon to a good strip) and the taste still is there. I do recommend steaks that are not too thick (1¼2 to 3¼4 inches). Serve this to impress and enjoy.
Hey, its Jill's dog, Vida. You know, the one in the photo with her. Yep, that's me, the handsome black lab. She's not feeling too great today, so I am finishing up this week's Pet Corner page for her. We have several stories that need follow-ups, so here they are: Let's start with Sparky, the ship's dog. On May 18, Sparky passed over to the other side. People get really sad when this happens, but I know she is now having fun in the Great Dog Park where all dogs run and play without the pain of old age; where there are no dog fights, and where we will all meet up again someday. Owners Alan and Joyce Bartlett wrote this about Sparky . . .
We all have treasured possessions, and our own reasons for holding them dear. Among my special treasures is a 2009 New York Racing Association, Inc. media pass issued under the aegis of ThoroFan. I hang the pass from a ribbon which held my credentials from Preakness 131, and so identified I can freely enter the gates of the Oklahoma Training Track. For me this is a real treat-I love to watch horses train. For 23 years of my life I either trained horses, or later tried to tell my husband or Jack Van Berg how to train horses. Even after all of that, and in spite of having more slow ones than fast ones, I would rather be at the rail watching horses train than just about anywhere else in the world.
Brett Hearn overcame a qualifying crash and last-place starting spot to again dominate the 35-Lap Modified feature at Albany Saratoga Speedway last Friday night. When Brett Hearn and Vince Quenneville, Jr. banged together in the third qualifying heat race, it seemed like a minor incident as Quenneville kept going and Hearn coasted into the infield. The contact, however, did extensive damage to the rear suspension on Hearn's car that left the Vinny Salerno #4 crew scrambling to get the car fixed. Hearn then had to start dead last in the feature. Todd Ryan took the lead at the drop of the Green Flag and was still leading when the first Caution came out on Lap 10 for Dave Camara who had been spun out. When the race was restarted, Hearn quickly broke into the Top Ten and was sitting 8th when the Caution waived again on Lap 13. On Lap 14, Marc Johnson took the lead with Ronnie Johnson not far behind as Ryan began to fade. Ronnie Johnson took second on Lap 16 and one lap later, drove around Marc Johnson for the lead. While all of that was taking place, Hearn was slicing his way through the Top Five as he passed Marc Johnson for second on Lap 19 and just 3 laps later passed Ronnie for the lead and continued to pull away over the remaining laps. Hearn's third win of the year was his 95th career victory. Ronnie Johnson, Ken Tremont, Jr., Marc Johnson and Matt Delorenzo followed.

In the wake of tough economic times, local school administrators and boards of education have been diligently working on keeping expenses at a minimum while preparing the school budgets for next year.
Asparagus season is a favorite springtime event for me. As a teenager in Connecticut, it was my favorite vegetable. The harvesting of my father's homegrown asparagus marked the start of good things to come out of the garden and the many savory dishes cooked by my mom. Dad started our asparagus bed from tips brought to him by his father who in turn had started his asparagus beds from the tips off the old family farm of his father's (my great grandfather) down in Cook Springs, Alabama.
Since Caffe Lena first opened its doors in downtown Saratoga Springs more than four decades ago, songwriters have been the staple of the city's music scene and now a new concert series titled "My Favorite Songwriter" will give local residents the opportunity to enjoy their favorite local songwriters as well as national songwriters when Mare, located at 17 Maple Ave, plays host to the concert series set to kick off on Sunday, May 31.
Originally a working cat (superior mouser), the Maine Coon cat is solid, rugged, and can tolerate harsh New England winters. Distinctive characteristics include tufted ears, a smooth shaggy waterproof coat, large round snowshoe feet and a long fluffy tail. They are some of the largest domestic North American cats ranging between 14 to 18 lbs for males and nine to 12 lbs for females. Maine Coon cat owners often describe them as affectionate, funny, and very smart. My friends, Richard Wilkinson and Susan Bender would agree that "Mainies" have delightful personalities. For the past seven years, Dick and Sue shared their home with two Maine Coon cats, Beau and Bella.
Ten-Time track champion Kenny Tremont, Jr. of West Sand Lake finally returned to Albany Saratoga's Victory Lane after last Friday night's 35-Lap Modified feature. Tremont, who was crowned Track Champion last season despite not winning a race, started ninth in the Riffenburg Construction #115 while his biggest rival, Brett Hearn, started right behind him. As the two favorites methodically worked their way through the pack, front row starter Tony Kawalchuk took advantage of a caution-free race to open up a huge lead. However, on Lap 15, with Tremont sitting in third place, that would all change when Hearn and Ronnie Johnson, while battling for fourth place, tangled entering the first turn resulting in both cars spinning out. Hearn and Johnson would have to restart in the rear. With the cars now tightly regrouped, Tremont quickly went by Don Ronca for second and by Lap 20, drove around Kawalchuk for the lead. With Tremont continuing to pull away from the pack, all eyes were on Hearn as he sliced his way back through the field but Hearn's bid for a sixth consecutive win fell short as he came home with a fourth place finish. Up front, Tremont took his first win since August of 2007 some four seconds ahead of Kawalchuk with Mike Perrotte third ahead of Hearn and Dave Camara fifth. For Tremont, who sits third on the track's all-time wins list, it was career win #49.
Have you looked around and noticed what's missing? If you are an outdoors person who enjoys hiking, camping, hunting or any other activity that gets you up off your hind end and out into the natural world around us, have you noticed what's missing? To me, it's so obvious that it can easily go unnoticed. What is it? Young people! Young people are what's missing from our outdoor world and activities.
The Preakness Stakes ended up being a race for the ages. Rachel Alexandra is as fleet as she is beautiful, and despite breaking from post position 13, she was able to control the pace until she was ready to take command to the finish. The gritty little Mine That Bird was heroic in defeat, and the race leaves us thinking many things.
For years, local parents have had to travel outside the area to find an indoor recreation facility that the whole family could enjoy. However, the days of traveling north to Lake George or south to Clifton Park to visit a family fun center could soon be over as owners of the Saratoga Strike Zone currently have plans to turn the facility into something the whole family can enjoy.
The fight to preserve the historic Universal Preservation Hall (UPH) in downtown Saratoga Springs began eight years ago, and while extensive interior work has stabilized the building, only now are people starting to see the project pay dividends as work on the building's "community plaza" is currently underway.

It took Michelangelo, the famed renaissance sculptor, more than three years to sculpt his masterwork, the statue of David. But who out there has that kind of time nowadays?
A couple of times in the Pet Corner, I have referred to my beloved service dog, Vida. Vida is now more than 11-years-old, she is fit and trim, but she is slowing down and now she has quite a bit of grey around her muzzle. The average life expectancy for a Lab is 11-12 years, but some live to be 13 or even 14 years. Of course I hope for her longevity, but at the same time, I am thinking she deserves an honorable retirement. With that in mind, I began the process of looking for another dog that Vida and I can train to do the things she does for me.
It's early May and time for the tender leaves of the young dandelion to emerge and be at their tastiest. Dandelions may be the dreaded invader of spring to the lawn fanatic, but they are a nutritious delight to a green salad and food lover.

Jason Barney and Chris Busta scored impressive wins in Sprint Car and Sportsman main events last Friday night at Albany Saratoga Speedway. Barney, of Constantia, NY, who had previously competed at the track with the E.S.S. Sprints without much success, won at the speedway for the first time in the first ever appearance of the ASCS Patriot Sprint Car Club. Mike Stelter led Lap 1 but on Lap 2, Barney blasted around the outside of Stelter as they drove off Turn 2 and he proceeded to open up a sizeable lead. Bubba Broderick was running second when the caution came out on Lap 14 and coasted to a stop under the caution because his safety belts had come undone. This relegated Broderick to the rear of the pack and put two-time and defending champion Bryan Howland on Barney's back bumper. Howland kept Barney in sight as they wove their way through lapped traffic but he couldn't muster up a challenge. A caution, with two laps to go, gave Howland one last shot for the win. On the restart, Howland swung to the outside of Barney as they exited Turn 2 in a sudden move that took Barney by surprise and the two made contact sending Howland off the track. Howland recovered but would have to settle for second place as Barney raced on to the win and the $1,750 prize money that went with it. Canada's Alain Bergeron and Steve Poirer finished third and fourth with Jared Zimbardi fifth and local favorite Jessica Zemken coming home sixth.
Spring is finally here! Grass is green, buds are popping on the trees, the ice and snow have finally melted, flowers are blooming, golf courses are preening their fairways and greens and the weekly beer blast has begun anew!
For whatever reasons, valid and otherwise, the Preakness Stakes (Gr. 1) gets short shrift. The race falls between the legendary, steeped-in-lore Kentucky Derby and the grueling distance of the Belmont Stakes. We can count the number of potential Triple Crown winners who made it to Kentucky Derby victory and Preakness bliss, only to be eaten alive by the track lovingly known as "Big Sandy."
My oh my! Has golf changed in Saratoga County over the past two decades! It wasn't that long ago that in order to play golf and avoid long waits on the first tee, you had to join a private golf club. There were very few public courses available and private courses were in great demand.
In recent months, the nation has been witness to an onslaught of mass shootings in local communities, including an incident that left 14 dead after a gunman entered an immigration center in Binghamton, NY last month. In response to such events, the Saratoga Springs Police Department is looking to form an emergency response team similar to a SWAT team in order to give officers the equipment and training necessary to deal with such high-volatile situations.
Tania Susi knows all too well the sacrifices that families have to make during times of war. The wife and mother of two, has been without her husband Dwayne since he was deployed to the Middle East in January. To make the situation of raising two children, Sonia, 7, and Eden, 5, even more challenging while her husband is stationed overseas, Tania is also nine months pregnant and due to give birth to her third child at any moment.
It began five years ago, back when Azurah Bertrand was just 10 years old, and Matthew Hartling, then age 15, was given only six months to live by his doctors.
A SWAT team in Saratoga Springs; sounds crazy doesn't it? After all, what really happens in Saratoga Springs?

The good people who work at the Saratoga County Animal Shelter have a tremendously challenging job. For example, they need to keep their cool when an angry dog owner comes in to pick up his dog after it was rescued from running loose in traffic. Rather than expressing gratitude for the safe return of the animal, these owners respond with anger over the inconvenience to them and the fine they must pay.
Due to growing popularity, the Saratoga Springs Auto Museum has added a second day to their 2009 Auto Show scheduled for May 16 and 17.
Fiddleheads are unique, short lived and not well known. However, in both haute cusine and earth mother cooking circles Fiddleheads are THE spring vegetable. They are only around for a very short time and emerge in the first really warm days of spring. They are the beginning of what could grow into an Ostrich Fern if not snapped up and eaten by whoever has the sense to do it. Fiddleheads have no match for their beauty and delicious flavor. Kilpatrick Farm, vendors at the Saratoga Farmers' Market, is celebrating the opening of the outdoor market season and spring in upstate NY with a fine selection of cultivated Fiddleheads at their table.
Moving up the ranks from T-Ball to Instructional Ball to Little League to the Majors and School Ball, (and somewhere in between them all, Travel Baseball), countless hours, days, months and years have been spent on the baseball fields. During that time, many memorable pictures have been taken to capture the exciting moments using Grandpa's camera that he wore with great pride around his neck. When I inherited the camera, I learned to do the same. The pictures are a reminder of the precious moments that this sport has provided over the years. The biggest dilemma we always faced in our family as the parents of three talented boys was, "Who will we watch today?" Yaya and Papa, Kyle's grandparents, always planned to be at one game while we were at another. During Travel Ball, our family often spent many weekdays during the spring traveling back and forth to Rotterdam for practices with the Knights. We traveled to many places during the summers including Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Sandy Kofax World Series. Kyle played for the Saratoga Stampede for two summers and also participated in two Empire State Games.
Brett Hearn continued his winning ways at the Albany Saratoga Speedway last Friday night with his second win in a row this season and his fifth win in a row, dating back to last August. For Hearn, who has been on a tear since taking on the role of the track's all-time leading winner last August, last Friday's win did not come easily. Despite starting in the second row in the 35-lap race, Hearn couldn't advance as front starters Dave Camara and Don Ronca were having a great race for the lead, running side-by-side for the first 10 laps.
You might think that 51 plus 43 equals 94, and in most instances, you would be correct.
The Kentucky Derby has long been heralded as the greatest two minutes in sports, but last Saturday's Run for the Roses did much more than excite fans - the greatest of all horse races validated why we run them. We saw one of the most contentious fields in Derby history enter the gate, and in the end saw a stunning upset. However, it should be noted that by the time the horses were called to the post many of the brightest stars had fallen from the limelight.
New Mom
On March 12, 2009 at 7:10 p.m., Kirsti Alden's life was changed forever.
Relationship with Mom
As Washington Irving once said, "a mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts."
Dear Mom - Once again Mother's Day is here and once again, I lament all those years that you've been gone. Can it possibly be close to 41? Unbelievable, to say the least.
Before my first child was even born, when I was heavily pregnant and doing what I could to mentally prepare for having a baby in the house, I asked my mom, "When can I expect the baby to start sleeping through the night?" Though I was over the moon that Steve and I were soon to have our baby in our arms, I was a little panicky over the thought of sleepless nights followed by days in which a nap was simply not an option.
There's just something about a tree fort, that childhood sanctuary that is yours and yours alone that captures the imagination of every child. Whether it's a place to watch the neighbor's dog through a pair of binoculars, a high hide to scheme and plan your next great adventure, or just a place to call your very own where you can indulge your dreams and imagination, a child's tree fort is unquestionably the envy of every other child in the neighborhood.

The 27th annual Saratoga Care Foundation Summer Benefit Auction may not be until August 5, but it's never too soon to start saving for the hot items that will be up for bid.
I have a wonderful Black Lab service dog, named Vida. She has been with me for over nine years. We go everywhere together. She comes with me to the nursing home when I visit my 94-year-old mother, she comes with me to the grocery store, and she comes with me to the YMCA when I swim in the mornings. Since I am in a wheelchair full time, she helps me when something is out of reach by picking up the item in her teeth and dropping it onto my lap - she is a wonderful canine companion and one of the gentlest souls I have ever known.
The Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church will host an evening with acclaimed organ and percussion duo, Organized Rhythm, on Friday, May 1.
Away from the hustle and bustle of busy downtown, several blocks from Broadway and tucked inconspicuously in a quiet, mostly residential neighborhood lies a business that has remained a part of Saratoga Springs for more than 115 years.
Yes, I did check the calendar and I do know that Earth Day was celebrated over one week ago. But a day of celebration is merely symbolic. The reality is, most people look to the vast global significance and overlook the immediate, as well as obvious. Remember one of Dorothy's closing lines in the Wizard of Oz movie, "I won't go looking any further than my own backyard, there's no place like home?" Well, when it comes to caring for the earth as a whole...being responsible with your own property is the first step. You can have a major impact on our LOCAL environment. Since the inception of the Earth Day movement back in the 70s, I am amazed to see just how many property owners are still practicing applications from that time warp? Are you?

The First Saturday in May is a date revered in Thoroughbred racing: the pageantry, the glory, the history and promise all bespeak an event that verges on the sacred. To Kentuckians, it's a day that conjures pride and speaks to their deep sense of tradition. Even those in Kentucky who care nothing about racing--or horses, for that matter--set aside that day to stop and reflect. It's a Holy Day of Obligation.
It's near-impossible to handicap a big raceday: all the horses are good, if not great-and with all the cacophony and madness, you can't hear yourself think. How does one handicap an impossible situation, with so many variables?
Auto racing fans all have their favorite drivers but everyone enjoys seeing a driver get his first win, and that is just what the fans at Albany Saratoga Speedway were treated to last Friday night when Guilderland's Pep Corradi wheeled his car into Victory Lane. With the Modified Division having the week off, the Sportsman Division took center stage. Corradi and Kory Sandstedt led the 22 car field to the starting line with Corradi taking the lead after one lap. On the second lap, Chris Busta, hugging the inside wall, took the lead and would stay there for the next 11 laps. Corradi was never far behind and, by Lap 12, his extreme outer line was starting to pay off as he made his way back by Busta as they completed Lap 13. Using the same lane as Corradi was David Towns who, despite setting the quickest time in time trials, had to start 6th as a result of the redraw. Towns was driving the potent Ford #3 usually driven by Mark Kislowsky. Without the aid of Caution Flags, Towns made up a lot of ground taking over second place on Lap 17 and then quickly catching Corradi. However, catching was all he could do because there was no getting around Corradi on this night. Corradi, a former slingshot racer and also a long-time crew member on Jeff Trombley's Modified, wheeled his F.W.C. Construction #21 to the win, much to the delight of the fans. Towns was a very close second, followed by Busta, Matt Depew, Sandstedt, Mike Ketchhum, Rob Langevin and Mike Tholin rounding out the first 8 cars across the line.
