For anyone looking for a good deal on household appliances and clothing, the place to be is the Salvation Army during the fifth annual Give and Go Tag Sale.
The two-day event is one of the major fundraisers for the charitable
organization and will take place on Friday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to 6
p.m. and May 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army located at
22 Woodlawn Avenue.
The Give and Go Tag Sale follows behind National Salvation Army Week which takes place the second week in May. The week is dedicated to raising awareness and money for Salvation Armies all across the nation and was declared in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Proceeds from the sale support the Salvation Army's food pantry, arts and music programs, shelters, youth and senior programs and day care in order to help fight hunger and lift the less fortunate out of poverty. This year's main recipient will be Salvation Army's Learning Center and after school programs.
The Learning Center provides free tutoring and help with homework to middle school and elementary students in Saratoga County as well as summer programs to keep children busy while school is out.
Many of the items that will be sold during the tag sale are household items left behind by Skidmore College students who moved out of their dorms, leaving electronics, furniture and clothing behind.
"It's unbelievable the things these kids leave behind but we really appreciate their cooperation," said Lt. Roger Miller of the Salvation Army. "It is so much better for the environment to collect the items rather than the students throwing the leftover items into a landfill. By selling these items, we give them a second life also."
Miller added that the Give and Go Tag Sale comes at a great time because prior to May is a very "dry" time of year, he said. Spring is the time of year people begin to clean the house and get rid of items that are simply gathering dust.
"We are into the sorting phase now," Miller said in anticipation of the sale. "There are so many items that we just need to get in order from mini-refrigerators to light fixtures. There's something for everyone here and the money raised will go to a good cause."
