Relationship with Mom

As Washington Irving once said, "a mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts."

In my 25 years as a daughter, I find Irving's words to ring true every time my mother sees tears on my cheeks. No matter where our relationship stood before that moment, she sees my red, wet eyes and forgets the world around her and concentrates on mine.
If it's about a boy, she automatically hates him. If it's about a friend, she helps me see the other side. If it's about life in general, she cries with me.

We have a very typical mother/daughter relationship. We have our blowout fights that, after a few days of not talking, go away and we are brought back to our normal relationship of talking about what's for dinner and what we liked about last week's "Grey's Anatomy." We disagree on everything from clothing style to music to food - I like spicy and she likes sweet. She will talk on the phone for hours and I can't even stand picking it up. While we don't share the same views on a lot of topics, we have the common mother/daughter bond that allows us to get along no less.

As I get older I'm starting to appreciate my mother for who she is as a human being. Growing up, a mother isn't considered a friend by most children. Mothers nag and yell and make us eat vegetables and wear helmets that completely ruin our pony tails when riding a bike. In time though, I learned that my mother might actually know a little bit more about life than I do and maybe I could follow her advice once in awhile, just to see if she is right.

As Mother's Day is upon us, we should all think about what we've gained from our mothers. Whether they are alive or have passed away, are your best friend or estranged, sick or healthy, this is the time to honor her. While I'm not a mother myself yet, I can only imagine the love that a mother feels for her child. I'm told it's a true love that burns the heart and soul.

This weekend, call your mother. If you can't afford a gift or flowers, go to her home and spend the day with her. Time is more precious than any object you can give her. Flowers die and presents get put in the closet but memories last a
lifetime.
