A response to a report of a domestic disturbance by Saratoga Springs Police on Wednesday, May 20, has resulted in the arrest of a man for allegedly possessing a live hand grenade.
Shortly after midnight on Thursday, May 21, Daniel Day, 22, of 14A
Kirby Rd. in the Town of Milton was arrested after officers initially
responded to a domestic disturbance call and discovered several weapons
and a live hand grenade in the residence. After discovering the
grenade, which was later determined to contain explosive materials,
officers secured the residence and contacted the New York State Police
Bomb Squad for further assistance, police said.
The building where the explosive was discovered is part of a residential apartment complex containing four separate apartments, two of which are currently unoccupied. The remaining residents were quickly evacuated until the State Police were able to respond to the scene.
After a search warrant issued by Saratoga Springs City Court Judge Jeffery Wait was granted, officials removed the weapons and hand grenade safely from the apartment.
By the time officers had arrived, Day had fled the scene. Day later contacted an agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency the following day and was taken into custody by agents without incident.
Day has been charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class-D felony; third-degree assault, a class-A misdemeanor; and fourth-degree criminal mischief, also a class-A misdemeanor.
The original victim of the domestic disturbance call was transported to Saratoga Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and has been released.
