A SWAT team in Saratoga Springs; sounds crazy doesn't it? After all, what really happens in Saratoga Springs?
I imagine everyone in Binghamton, Columbine and Virginia Tech felt the same way... until the unthinkable happened.
Like it or not, it's a scary world out there with some crazy individuals. As for me, I am a strong proponent of acting proactively rather than reactively, so I praise the Saratoga Springs Police Department for this decision.
If you didn't read the front page story, Saratoga Springs P.D. is currently completing paperwork for a $240,000 grant from the federal government.
The funds will go to newer high-tech equipment, with the majority of the funds going to officer training. I think that is great, the more training the better. A responsible police department always needs to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
For those of you that balk at the use of the funds, this decision isn't about dollars and cents; it is about human lives. It is about moms and dads, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. Hopefully the team is never required, but if it is, as a taxpayer I want them prepared for all scenarios.
In my personal life I had the honor to know, and train, with fallen state trooper Joe Longabardo. Joe was a great guy with a wonderful family until some scum took his life. I don't ever want to see a similar scenario play out locally.
As Sun Tzu said in the 6th century B.C. "To... not prepare is the greatest of crimes; to be prepared beforehand for any contingency is the greatest of virtues."
