Local residents will enjoy the sweet aroma of confections in the air at Wiswall Park in Ballston Spa on June 5 as the village kicks off its free outdoor summer film series with a showing of "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," presented in "AromaRama."
AromaRama, otherwise known as "Smell-O-Vision," is a system that
releases odors during the showing of a film so that the viewer can
smell what is happening in the movie. During the June 5 showing of
"Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," members of the audience will
take in the aroma of chocolate, bubble gum, blueberries and an array of
other confections that are present in the classic family film.
Daniel DeFabio, director of the Ballston Spa Film Festival, said the technique was first developed by Charles Weiss in the 1950's to enhance the viewing experience by adding a sense of smell to the visualization of such scents on-screen.
DeFabio added that the smells which will emulate throughout Wiswall Park during the film's showing are the same kind of scents that many of the village's older residents might recall smelling back when the Bischoff Chocolate Factory was operating in the village.
"This is especially appropriate for Ballston Spa, since the village was once filled with the scent of fresh chocolate coming from the Bischoff Chocolate Factory," DeFabio said.
The film series in its second year is part of the village's First Friday promotional event. It is sponsored by the Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association in conjunction with promotion of the Ballston Spa Film Festival, which will be held Aug. 7-8 in Wiswall Park and features more than 40 short films from around the world.
If AromaRama doesn't make the audience feel like they are a part of the film, people in attendance will also be given the opportunity to purchase the famous Wonka bars - five of which will contain golden tickets redeemable for prizes at local businesses.
Movies presented during the summer film series are projected on the wall of the Front Street Deli building every First Friday from June through October. Each film is family-oriented and free to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. The movies start around 9 p.m.
"Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," is a 1971 film based on the 1964 Roald Dahl novel that tells the story of Charlie Bucket and his pursuit to find one of five golden tickets placed in Wonka chocolate bars that will give each ticket holder the chance to tour the most popular and secretive chocolate factory in the world: The Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory. The film stars Gene Wilder as Willie Wonka and was directed by Mel Stuart.
