Pulse - Organ and percussion duo to perform at local church

Categories:

The Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church will host an evening with acclaimed organ and percussion duo, Organized Rhythm, on Friday, May 1.

The show is part of the Frobenius Organ Concert Series, which was created after the Frobenius tracker organ was built in Denmark and installed at the church in 1996.

Brian Trombley, member of the concert series' planning committee and son of the late Henry Trombley for whom the concert will be dedicated, said he believed the show would be one of the more interesting concerts the committee has held since its inception due to the unusual organ and percussion pairing.

"When my father had chosen these two musicians he thought it would generate an interest from people because of the odd pairing," Trombley said.

He added that the series had featured other soloists alongside organists in the past, but they had never had a percussionist perform before.

The show is being dedicated in honor of Brian's father Henry, who was an educator, community leader and chairman of the organ committee before his death in February.

"They thought it was an important and appropriate dedication," Trombley said.

The concert series is made possible through funds from the Saratoga Program for Arts Funding (SPAF), which is administered by the Saratoga County Arts Council. The series also relies heavily on contributions and free-will donations.

To enable the committee to bring the up-in-coming duo to Saratoga Springs this Friday, the group gave the committee the option of providing all of the percussion equipment in order to keep costs down. Trombley said they were able to provide the group with the equipment and save money thanks to the Saratoga Springs High School and Skidmore College music departments who loaned the committee the needed instruments.

Trombley added that the committee is always looking to get the local youth more involved in each concert because the majority of people who attend classical music performances are often older.

"You have to attract younger people for this kind of concert," Trombley said. "Otherwise you are going to fail sometime in the future because you aren't going to have the people to support the programming."

Organized Rhythm is made up of the synthesis of organist Clive Driskill-Smith and multi-percussionist Joseph Gramley. Driskill-Smith is considered a leading organist of his generation and has been hailed by critiques for his "blazing technique" and "unbelievable virtuosity." Gramley, who has performed worldwide with cellist Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, the Metropolitan Opera and Elton John, will display his "charismatic style" and "magnetic stage presence" by performing on 11 percussion instruments including marimba, glockenspiel, chimes and vibraphone.

The duo's performance will feature an eclectic mix of musical styles from baroque to cotemporary, including selections from "Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saens.
Both musicians will\ be available to answer audience questions during the two-hour concert's intermission.

The concert will take place at the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church (located at 175 Fifth Avenue) from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public, but a free-will donation is encouraged.
