Sports - Hearn dominant in win

Brett Hearn overcame a qualifying crash and last-place starting spot to again dominate the 35-Lap Modified feature at Albany Saratoga Speedway last Friday night. When Brett Hearn and Vince Quenneville, Jr. banged together in the third qualifying heat race, it seemed like a minor incident as Quenneville kept going and Hearn coasted into the infield. The contact, however, did extensive damage to the rear suspension on Hearn's car that left the Vinny Salerno #4 crew scrambling to get the car fixed. Hearn then had to start dead last in the feature. Todd Ryan took the lead at the drop of the Green Flag and was still leading when the first Caution came out on Lap 10 for Dave Camara who had been spun out. When the race was restarted, Hearn quickly broke into the Top Ten and was sitting 8th when the Caution waived again on Lap 13. On Lap 14, Marc Johnson took the lead with Ronnie Johnson not far behind as Ryan began to fade. Ronnie Johnson took second on Lap 16 and one lap later, drove around Marc Johnson for the lead. While all of that was taking place, Hearn was slicing his way through the Top Five as he passed Marc Johnson for second on Lap 19 and just 3 laps later passed Ronnie for the lead and continued to pull away over the remaining laps. Hearn's third win of the year was his 95th career victory. Ronnie Johnson, Ken Tremont, Jr., Marc Johnson and Matt Delorenzo followed.

Mark Kislowski was impressive in his 25-Lap Sportsman victory as he held a 3.5 second advantage over second place finisher Rich Ronca.

Even more impressive is the fact that the Sportsman Division ran their feature Green-to-Checkers without a Caution Flag for the fourth time in five weeks. Some great driving has been displayed by the undercard division. Rob Langevin, Ken Anatriello and Mike Tholin completed their Top Five.

Controversy surrounded the Pro-Stock feature both during and after the race. Kevin VanChance had led the first 16 laps without incident but, on Lap 17, a three-wide battle for the lead developed as he, Rob Yetman and Chuck Towslee went through the first and second turn side-by-side. As the cars came onto the backstretch, Towslee began pushing VanChance and, as VanChance started to spin, Towslee continued to push the #21 until its wheels dug into the clay and flipped high into the air and came down hard on the right rear causing extensive damage. Towslee was sent pit-side for his part in the wreck. Yetman led the final 8 laps only to be disqualified after post-race inspections as his distributor was deemed illegal. The win was awarded to 2008 Champion Kim Duell with Walt Brownell, Jr., Lori Langevin, Kenny Martin and Jimmy Monroe following.

Jack Gentile won the Budget Sportsman feature in dramatic style.

Gentile caught race leader Derrick McGrew on the final lap and made the pass for the win going down the backstretch for win #3 this season. McGrew finished second over Cullen, Howe, Dan Petronis and DJ Brundige.

Mark "Rowdy" Burch won his first Limited race of the year in their 20-Lap event. The race had to be red flagged twice as first Yule Cook flipped his car on Lap 1 and later a multi-car wreck resulted in Ken Conroy flipping and catching fire on the front stretch. All drivers were ok.
Racing also took place on Saturday night at Albany Saratoga featuring a 20-Lap $1,000 to win Mini Sprint feature that was won by New Jersey's Ralph Utter. In other action Saturday, Jack Gentile won his second race of the weekend in the 25-Lap D.I.R.T. car Sportsman race.
As in Friday's race, he was again followed by Derreck McGrew. Travis Tromans was the overall winner in the Mini/Duke Stock feature.

This Friday, May 29th, is Armed Forces Night with anyone with a valid military ID being admitted free. All Divisions will be competing. In addition, on Saturday and Sunday, there will be a Monster Truck and Stunt Show. Call the Speedway for information at (518) 587-0220.
