Sports - Tremont back on top

Ten-Time track champion Kenny Tremont, Jr. of West Sand Lake finally returned to Albany Saratoga's Victory Lane after last Friday night's 35-Lap Modified feature. Tremont, who was crowned Track Champion last season despite not winning a race, started ninth in the Riffenburg Construction #115 while his biggest rival, Brett Hearn, started right behind him. As the two favorites methodically worked their way through the pack, front row starter Tony Kawalchuk took advantage of a caution-free race to open up a huge lead. However, on Lap 15, with Tremont sitting in third place, that would all change when Hearn and Ronnie Johnson, while battling for fourth place, tangled entering the first turn resulting in both cars spinning out. Hearn and Johnson would have to restart in the rear. With the cars now tightly regrouped, Tremont quickly went by Don Ronca for second and by Lap 20, drove around Kawalchuk for the lead. With Tremont continuing to pull away from the pack, all eyes were on Hearn as he sliced his way back through the field but Hearn's bid for a sixth consecutive win fell short as he came home with a fourth place finish. Up front, Tremont took his first win since August of 2007 some four seconds ahead of Kawalchuk with Mike Perrotte third ahead of Hearn and Dave Camara fifth. For Tremont, who sits third on the track's all-time wins list, it was career win #49.

In other racing last Friday, Frank Corradi of Schenectady took his first career win in the 25-Lap Sportsman feature. Corradi led all 25 laps in the green-to-checkers run but had to hold off a strong challenge by Mike Tholin late in the race. Corradi's cousin, Pep Corradi, crossed the line third with Dave Constantino fourth and Chris Busta fifth.

As a result of the rain storm the previous Friday night, the Budget Sportsman, Pro-Stock and Limited divisions all had two feature races.

DJ Brundige of Mechanicville won the first Budget race over Scott Straight, Anthony Marro, Jack Gentile and Bryan Davis. In their night-cap, Jack Gentile came through the pack to pass Cullen Howe with five laps to go to score his second win this season. Howe held on to second place ahead of Brundige, Derrick McGrew and Marc Hughes.

In Pro-Stock action, Rob Yetman completely dominated both 25-lap races. Yetman of Castelton driving the Lazzaro Motorsports #7 took the lead in the first race on Lap 5 and, after a miscue that saw him drop to 4th place, retook the lead on Lap 9. He then easily outdistanced the field. Ed Thompson, Bill Smith, Kim Duell and Bob Schmidt followed. In the second Pro-Stock feature, Yetman needed only six laps to catch and pass early leader Jeff Washburn and cruise to his second win of the night and his third of the season. Jeremy Pitts, three seconds back, finished second with Schmidt, Washburn and Bernie Companion completing the Top Five.

A pair of Ballston Spa drivers won the two Limited races. In the first race, Dan Older took the lead on Lap 8 and had to endure some full-contact racing with Dan Petronis on Lap 17 to net his second win of the year. Petronis, Jon Miller, Brian O'Reilly and Dave Billings were next across the line. In the final race of the night, Mike Ostrander won a caution plagued race for his first win of the year.

Behind him were Billings, Petronis, Mark Lester and Brandon Emigh.

This Friday, May 22, will again see all divisions competing on Kids'Night with several activities planned for the kids. The track's new barbeque stand is providing some great alternatives to the regular concessions. Fun for the whole family. Race time is 6:45 p.m.
