Murphy wins 20th District race

After weeks of absentee ballot counting, Democrat Scott Murphy became the congressman for the 20th Congressional District after Republican Jim Tedisco conceded the race for the vacant seat on Friday, April 24.

"I am honored and humbled to be going to Washington to represent the families of New York's 20th Congressional District," Murphy said in a press release following his victory. "I look forward to rolling up my sleeves in Washington to bring jobs, opportunity, and prosperity back to Upstate New York."

Since the March 31 special election, the lead in the race changed several times and at one point both candidates had even been tied. However, Murphy's lead remained steady once absentee ballots were counted. At the time of Tedisco's concession, Murphy's lead had stood at a 399-vote margin.

Murphy, a venture-capitalist from Glens Falls, will serve out the remainder of Sen. Kirsten Gilibrand's term, which runs until January 2011.

"My thanks to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for her extraordinary leadership and support for my campaign. Living up to her example of honest representation and hard work is something I will aspire to do every day," Murphy said in the press release.

Gillibrand vacated the post this past January after Gov. David Paterson appointed her to Hilliary Clinton's U.S. Senate seat.

Murphy was officially sworn into the position on Wednesday, April 29 in Washington D.C. by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

AHL hockey returns to Glens Falls

The city of Glens Falls will once again host a minor-league hockey franchise after the owners of American Hockey League's Phantoms announced that they would be moving the team to the city on Tuesday, April 28.

The owners had originally set a goal of selling 2,500 season tickets before they made a decision on whether or not to commit to moving the team to the city. By mid-day Tuesday, the team had commitments for more than 1,600 full or partial season tickets; however, the team's owner Robert Brooks said a combination of factors led to the decision to relocate the team to Glens Falls even before the ticket goal was met.

City officials said while the team's owners have committed to bringing the Phantoms to Glens Falls they still intend to sell the original goal of 2,500 season tickets before the season begins.

The AHL is the highest level of minor league hockey. The city previously hosted the Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL for 20 seasons before leaving in 1999. The last professional hockey team to make its home at the Glens Falls Civic Center was the Adirondack Frostbite of the United Hockey League during the 2005-06 season.
