Fire levels Saratoga Winners

By the time firefighters arrived on the scene after receiving a phone call at 3:15 a.m. on Thursday morning, April 30, Saratoga Winners, the once popular bar and concert venue was all but lost.  Eight different local fire departments arrived on the scene to douse the flames, which took officials nearly three hours to get under control.  When the dust had settled, nothing of the former roadhouse venue remained standing. The cause of the blaze remains unknown.

Saratoga Winners, which hosted acts such as Marcy's Playground, The Black Crowes, Peter Frampton, and a huge variety of punk and heavy metal bands, had closed its doors three years earlier in 2006.  After it fell into the hands of a new owner the building was gutted and fitted with a new roof, and many hoped to see the venue up and running again by the fall of 2007.  But the fall came and went, the doors remained closed, and Saratoga Winners sat unkempt and unused.

An investigation by the town of Colonie is underway to determine the fire's origin.

"I look forward to rolling up my sleeves in Washington to bring jobs, opportunity, and prosperity back to Upstate New York," Murphy said in a written statement.

Camp McGregor closure date set for July 1

In an effort to reduce state spending and streamline the state's prison system, the minimum-
security prison Camp McGregor on Mount McGregor in Wilton will close as of July 1.  The medium-security Mount McGregor Correctional Facility will not be affected by the closing and will continue its operations.

Camp McGregor is one of three minimum-security prisons that are expected to shut down, saving the state an estimated $12 million in expenses.

Camp McGregor, which can hold as many as 300 inmates, has been underused for years.   Currently the prison is only housing 49 inmates.

Prison guards who work at the camp are all expected to be offered jobs at neighboring facilities, including the medium-security site at Mount McGregor, as well as the Great Meadow and Washington correctional facilities in Washington County.

Other minimum-security camps which plan to close as of July 1 include Camp Gabriel in Franklin County and Camp Pharsalia in Chenango County.
