A local barbecue pit has been named one of the nation's best by viewers of "Live with Regis and Kelly."
Giffy's Bar-B-Q in Clifton Park was named a quarter-finalist in the
Ultimate Hometown Grill Off contest, a competition that invited viewers
to nominate an establishment with the best grill recipe. After viewing
a one-minute explanation of the restaurants that made the cut and their
recipes, viewers had a 48-hour window to cast their votes online. The
restaurant was nominated by an anonymous person who Gifford was told
was from Schenectady.
"I didn't know anything about it. We had a message from the producers of 'Regis and Kelly' saying we were nominated for the contest and I thought it was a prank. We called back and it was totally legit," co-owner Randy Gifford said.
Once he got the phone call it was time to produce the one-minute video, which is what Gifford said won the contest for them.
"We made sure to show everything - the grill pit, the smoke. A lot of it had to do with the presentation," he said.
While Giffy's was named the best barbecue chicken, there will be nine more contests during the summer for different barbecue recipes with a grand prize of appearing in an upcoming issue of "Home and Garden" magazine. Two finalists will be asked to return to the set of "Live" for a grill-off to determine which restaurant in the country has the best barbecue recipe.
This will be the first time the Gifford family will share their secret barbecue recipe with the public, Gifford said.
Gifford and his son and co-owner Bryah traveled to New York City to be featured on Friday's episode of "Live with Regis and Kelly."
"We'll be cooking our own recipe on the street with Regis and Kelly," Gifford said. "We're very excited about all of this. For a small mom and pop operation I think we've come a long way."
Giffy's started in 1995 when the Jonesville Methodist Church asked the Gifford family to cater a barbecue picnic. Gifford had been working with an old recipe that he found at Cornell University and perfected it in time for the event. Once Giffy's Inc. was started, Randy, his wife Peggy and children Bryah, Charlie and Amy began working from a renovated RV. Today they have grown into a full sized restaurant and ice cream stand with a fleet of trucks and trailers for catering.
"We have catered just about every kind of event--church events, weddings, fundraisers. To get where we are today, you have to work hard. There's no such thing as a 40-hour work week in this business. We've given up a lot of personal and family time for the business but look at where we are today," Gifford said.
He added that being honored on "Live with Regis and Kelly" was a dream come true and that it never would have happened without his dedicated staff.
"We all work hard every day. I have a great staff and they are the ones that got us here. I never could have done this without them," Gifford said.
