On Sunday, June 14, Literacy NENY will host their first annual Read Run 5K in Saratoga Springs.
The event will begin at the Saratoga Springs Public Library and will
follow a course through town. Both avid runners and those who want to
simply get out for a stroll are encouraged to sign up for the event.
The Read Run 5K will launch Literacy's Run into Summer Reading Campaign
and raise awareness and support for the serious Literacy issues that
affect our community.
Literacy NENY provides tutoring and classroom services free of charge to people who are struggling with reading, writing and math skills and offers classes to prepare for GED exams and citizenship tests.
"We need more help than ever. People are using our services more and more with the state of the economy right now. So many people are looking for jobs and having better qualifications really helps," said Nancy Holzman of Literacy NENY.
The race costs $20 to sign up now and the price will go up to $30 the day of the race. For children who wish to compete the price is $10, but if a child simply wants to walk with their family there is no charge.
"We are hoping to reach out to everyone. People can run the race to compete for prizes or they can just walk to help raise awareness about literacy and education," Holzman said.
Six Flags Great Escape is a major sponsor and will be sending Looney Toons characters to line the course and cheer on the crowds. Wilton Kiwanis has generously donated 100 brand new Scholastic books which will be handed out to young children who attend the race.
Another major sponsor, Froggy Radio, will be on-site with their big green Froggy mascot giving out balloons and other giveaways, including discount passes to Great Escape hidden in some of the children's books. There is also a costume contest for walkers who come dressed as their favorite literary character. Participants are encouraged to get creative, Holzman said.
A raffle prize is also being offered to participating book groups. Any book club that registers ten or more people in the Read Run 5K will be entered in the raffle. The winning book club will be invited to a book discussion and reception at an historic camp on Lake George with Julia Glass, the best-selling author of "Three Junes," "The Whole World Over," and "I See You Everywhere."
"There will be something fun for everyone who attends, whether they are participating or volunteering. We are so excited about this event and the important issues it promotes," Holzman said.
To register for the race, visit www.literacyneny.org or call the office at 1-866-230-4756. The race begins at 9 a.m.
