Golf activity was highlighted by the Saratoga County Amateur
Championship hosted by the McGregor Links Country Club. Over the past
weekend, 80 of the most proficient golfers who are residents of
Saratoga County competed for the coveted title.
There were two divisions, open and seniors. The Senior division was for golfers 50 years old and older. A two-day affair, the second day involved the top 12 players and ties in each division that made the cut.
The Open division was a two-man challenge between Brian Crum, a 38-year-old Navy lieutenant stationed at the West Milton Site. A member of the Ballston Spa Country Club, he has lived in Ballston Spa for the past two years and Matt Canavan, a long-time member of McGregor Links and the sentimental favorite.
At the end of the first day of play, Crum's 70 gave him a one-stroke advantage over Canavan's 71. On the second day of play, it was Canavan's 76 over Crum's 77 resulting in a tie at 147.
In a sudden death playoff that lasted one hole, Crum birdied the par 5 460 yard first hole against Canavan's par to claim the title.
In the Senior division, it was Bill Paulsen's steady play with a 2-day total of 144 on two even par rounds of 72-72. Paulsen, one of our area's top senior players, is the owner of the Eagle Crest Golf Club in Jonesville. Ironically, he defeated his long-time playing partner, Dan Seiter, at Eagle Crest by one shot. Seiter had rounds of 72-73 for a total of 145. Paulsen was the defending champion.

On the Pro Scene: It was a bad weekend for sudden death playoffs for area golfers. In the amateur ranks, Matt Canavan missed his chance to be crowned the Saratoga County Amateur Champion.
At the professional level, it was Kevin Hughes, Head Pro at the Saratoga Golf and Polo Club, who also lost his chance to become the Donald Ross Classic Champion when he lost to Assistant Pro Matt Felber of the Albany Country Club. Hughes also lost on the first extra hole of play.
Sorry guys - it would have been nice to crown two champions from our hometown!
Fairway Feats
At Mechanicville Golf Club, George Harbeson holed out with a 5-wood on his second shot at the par-5 fourth hole for a double eagle. It's the second double eagle on that hole this year.
